MEATS!!!

My 64 Safari has been begging me to put some American Racing Torq Thrust D's on since I bought it.  So I'm going to do it as soon as I figure some stuff out, which leads me to asking you guys....

I want to fill up as much of the rear wheel wells as possible, and I want to stay with the old skool look of 15 inch wheels.  Can someone recommend the maximum wheel/tire size I can cram in there without rubbing or sticking out of the wheel well?

The car has a 5 bolt pattern, I'm guessing it has the stock wheel hubs and axles.  What is my exact bolt pattern?

I'm also looking for someone to enlighten me on how the science of backspacing works.

Thanks for lookin'

Derek in Regina

This is what I run,, It's as old school as you can get !

15 x 8 1/2 SUPER ET's   and 15 x 7 SUPER ET's

I will have to double check the back space, but I think they are 3 1/2" BS on the rear , and 3" on the fronts.

tires are 275/60/15   2235/60/15

bolt pattern is 4 3/4"

here is a link to a clinic on how to measure your back / front spacing

these pics show how they tuck in, I can get some more later if you need.

Nice look, exactly what I'm shooting for. Is that a negative backspace? Also, will you divulge your tire size to me?

Do you think you could stuff a 295/50/15 in there?

I still have a safe 3/4" clearance ,, so it should be doable

here is what a 315/60/15 looks like on a 8" rim......these are on my 33 coupe.. just to show the tire bulge..

I've got a pic of 8 1/2 with a 295 on it ,, let me dig around....

Now those are MEATS!!! Based on the back space you gave me I found a formula to convert backspace to offset. The American Racing website only shows offsets. A 15x8.5 with a -25 offset works out to be about a 3.75 B/S. I think this should work.

Derek, if that's a Cdn. "WAGOON" it's 4 3/4 " if US model. it's a 5" pattern

stock Custom Sport rear coils, I had changed the fronts to ?? out of maybe a 62 4 dr.? I cut 1 1/4 coils out of them to get the stance.

Custom Sports sat 1" lower? factory from everything else , right off the GM floor .. someone here can confirm the actual #.

It takes 2 jacks to get the wheels on, one to raise the body, the other to lower the rear up and down to get the clearance, because of the arc the suspension travels,, but the pain is worth it !!
