IS THE FUEL LINE JUNCTION NECESSARY 115" WB CHASSIS?

I'm building a new 5/16" gas line from the tank forward and at about the firewall area my old one has what looks like an OEM junction bushing /fitting before continueing forward and around the front chassis crossmember.

I'm figuring this was to accomodate other engines in the Chev. line that may have had a driver's side fuel pump. I don't see any reason to build that junction inline for my particular chassis/ motor (239C.I.) . Am I missing something here??

I would think that it's just a "joiner" for the fuel line!!! Factory likely couldn't make it all one length????
