Sweet 74 Malibu Classic - Canadian built

Heads up G3 lovers, there is a mint 1974 Malibu Classic Landau with 18,000 original miles on e-Bay. It was built by GM Canada and has spent its life in Tennessee. Many power accessories on it, the chrome is great and so is the interior. It's not the easiest car to restore so a find like this one is therefore the thing to do.

I'll post the link, but how do you guys actually get the ad to show in your post?

Looks like a beauty.

Full load with air, power windows and power seats.
Those US buyers really went for that stuff.

The vinyl interior looks very nice.

Looks excellent throughout.

Ad says it has a 350 with Turbo 400; wouldn't the trans have been a T350 with that engine in 1974?

Yes, I don't think they put a 400 behind a 350 in that car.

VIN  shows engine code R which is actually a 400 small block so wouldn't a turbo 400 would most likely go behind that. It is pretty common for people to mistake the 400 for a 350, we all recall that Hillars's 2+2 was appraised as a 350 even though we all know it was a 400.

If it was a 350 4bbl it would have come with dual exhausts as well and this car is single. The other thing to notice is that the underhood emmission decal says 350/400 2bbl.

Wow, I would never have remembered they even offered a 400 in Malibu. That makes it even neater to be a low miler with the big small block in it.

Carl, I know that in 75 they did and in 76 the 400 sbc was the top engine since 454 was not offered. I am with you, but the VIN does not lie. Perhaps it was a US option and this car was made for export.

The L48 350 had 185 HP, the L65 350 had 145 HP and the 400 2bbl sbc had 150 HP although we know it had substantial torque.

A 400, even better! The 400 was more about having lots of torque than pure h.p., so 150 net was an accurate, emissions state of tune figure. 395 lbs/ft of torque rather than 345.

The 400 small block appeared in in Chevelles for 1974. In 1975 they got a 4-barrel along with the cat; 175 net h.p. There was a 400 4-barrel in 74 for California rated at 180 net with single exhaust.

I had a 74 Impala with a 400 SB and it had a Turbo 350 so I'm doubtful that this car has a Turbo 400 even if it is a 400 SB. But you never know ...

I think 74 was the last year you could get a big block in the Chevelle. But I can't recall availability of the 400 SB.

Hillar's 2+2 was a 400/400 combo. If they had this car up in the air it is pretty easy to tell a 400 THM from a 350 THM a lot easier than to tell a 400 sbc from a 350 sbc.  I don't know if it is a 400 THM but it would make sense to me if it was. Pretty poor advertising and knowledge if they screwed up both the engine and tranny in the ad.

!975 VIN list does show 454 as available. I know in LeMans the 455 was only available in Safari in 1975 so perhaps still available in Chevelle wagons. Cam do you know ?

The 455 was available in the Lemans Safari, plus the Grand Am. 400 was tops for the rest. I believe that the 455 came back for 1976 in any Lemans, then was gone forever.

In 75 you could get any Chevelle with the 454. Not many did. They were TH400 only. Wagons, 4-doors, 2-doors, Malibu, Malibu  Classic, Laguna Type S3. For 76 the 400 small block was tops, then the 350 for 77.

I went to look at a 73 Chevelle SS 454 M22 back in the early 1990's in Thorold the guy was the original owner said he was going to buy one in 72 but waited for the new models for the new style and better value (newer model year for only little $ more) he went on to tell me how much rarer his car was than a 72 ! (theres a reason for that) but in hindsight I shoulda bought it-the car was light green with white interior I think swivl high back buckets-owner had added eight inch Corvette wheels--they musta been using up the end ofthe supply of M22's !

funny how it goes-I know another guy that had a 67 corvette new-traded it at the end of the year on a 67 SD396 beaumont and got $ difference drove it the winter then traded on a "new" 68 corvette ! with the same $ difference ! shoulda kept the Beaumont ! we all know the difference in value of a 67 and 68 corvette
