new to me 261.

hey all just found this site and think its great!!!!

anyways i just bought a 261 off my local kijiji and want to know somethings about it.

i know its a 261 by the capitans bars and the vin.

it has the smaller oil bypass filter on it, 3/8 as opposed to 1/2 like the usa truck ones.

anyways this thing has been sitting for a donkeys year, i got as far as pulling the v/c off and one rocker is broken and some of the push rods are bent, so it will need a rebuild.

what i would like to know is were can i get parts?

nappa only shows usa 261's are they really that different then canadian ones?

i know the canadian ones had bypass oil filters, fibre timing gears and hydro lifeters and cam.

were there anyother differences?

the number on the block is 3836340

from what i could find this translates to a 67 usa truck engine.

but from my little bit of inspection i know it has hydro lifters  in it.

any and all help will be greatsmile

I just had one rebuilt and the parts can from Piston ring. The parts were not easy for them to find they got them from a bunch of different supplier.

The 261 is basically the same design as a 235 externally  but quite different with internal parts. The main difference is the head gasket and the head with the steam hole provisions. You will need a 261 specific head gasket . The pistons , connecting rods and wrist pins are also 261 only. The wrist pin is a wider diameter than a 235. The 261 used heavy duty parts as compared to a 235 as the 261 was designed for truck use.

THANKS FOR THE REPLYS.

CAN I ORDER I USA TRUCK REBUILD KIT FOR MY ENGINE?

MINUS THE HYDRAULIC LIFTERS AND CAM?

IS THE CAM GEAR DIFFERENT AS WELL?

TO LOOK AT A 261 OR A 235 THEY ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL TO LOOK AT BUT I DO KNOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT INTERNAL AND NOW WITH THIS ONE BEING CANADIAN I WANT TO BE SURE I GET THE RIGHT STUFF.

I may have 1 in my 56 2 dr that I am breaking up. Still turns over with the key but the plug wires etc were shot and I wasn't interested in putting any $$ or time into it.

If you can get a complete rebuild kit for a US truck 261 less cam and lifters that will work for your 261. The fibre cam gear was used to make the engine sound a little quieter, but I would use a steel gear during a rebuild for added strength. You can also source some aftermarket performance parts such as higher compression pistons, higher lift camshaft etc. There are even some McGurk cylinder heads that appear on Ebay once in a blue moon. From my own research the cylinder head used on the 1962 261  has a smaller combustion chamber for a 1/2 point higher compression ratio than the earlier low compression 7.8 to 1 engines.

Try these guys in Vancouver.  I have heard they are very good but have never used them myself.

Hi

I wish I could help you with this, but I am writing to you for another reason. I saw a post you had a wile back for a 235 engine you had. I was wondering if you might still have one for sale.  I have a 1947 Chevy with a cracked block. I am desperately looking for a 235 or 261 from 1955 through 1961. I would really appreciate any help.

I'm sorry I couldn't help with your problem.

This member hasn't been on the forum for a couple of years so you probably won't get a response from him unless someone else on here happens to know him. Good luck with your search.
