RE: 68-72 A body 12 bolt 2.73 NO posi

I was tempted... but seeing how I still have 3 12 bolts I'm hoarding...

1 loose with 3.31 , 1 in a 1971 Monte Carlo,  1 in a 69 Buick Skylark, OH ..and a chevy 12 bolt with 4.56 posi in my 67 GTO .

I kinda figured I'd let someone buy this one that really needed it ?

I am a hoarder,  and this is my self help group !

I just ran the numbers on it.

RA 0628K 3917124N

Meaning from what I can tell it came out of a 68-69 Olds car, it is a C type diff, 2.73 open rear. Born June 28 at the McKinnon plant

From reading the C type means its an all Chevy diff, on the outside its looks like a Chevy. I'll have to pull the cover to see whats on the inside.

Hmm, maybe I'm remembering wrong but I was sure it was in a Monte. At any rate, it certainly is the Chev type as indicated by the cover.

I'll be mad if it's nicer gears than 2.73!!!!!

Sure enough, I looked in my Chevelle/Monte book as well as the Cutlas book and I see the code is from a Cutlass. However, it still is the Chev 12 bolt, identical to the Chevelle diff other than it came out of a Cutlass obviously.

I had another A body 12 bolt that I sold a few years ago, housing and axles only. It must have come from the Monte and this one from a different car that I am not remembering.

Are you still ok with the deal?

I was tricked by the 70 Olds 12 bolt years back.  I bought a 70 Vista for the 12 bolt and disc brakes and high horse rocket.  THEN I found out about the 'O' type 12 bolt, good strong diffs, but almost no parts available anymore.

being a Vista , it was an american built car.

If it has C clips it will have chevy guts but if it has the factory C clip eleminators then it will have the 10 bolts guts.

This one will have C clips, yes. Very sure of that.

Those crazy mixed up 10 bolt/12 bolt diffs all seem to have that oddball cover.

Your right Carl there is something different about the cover  on those BOP diffs.

We're good Carl. I'm pretty sure it will be all Chevy. Thats why I had asked you if it was a chevy 12 bolt and not a BOP 12 bolt. I'm going to pull the cover tommorrow.  I dont now what  Beaumont4008 means by the factory C clip eliminators. I'm going to have to look that up. That must be a BOP thing.

On the BOP diffs the bearings are pressed on the axles and held in place with a bracket bolted on the axle flange. The same as a ford 9 in.

Thanks for the info.  Thats how all the aftermarket diffs are being built for the A Body. The Strange S60, the Moser 12 bolt etc. are built with the *ord ends and the bolt pattern of the Chevy so you can still bolt the drums back on.
