hey guys im having a hard time keeping my engine running! i noticed that when i pull my throttle open all the way the butterflys at the top only open slightly and the ones underneath don't open at all soo i took the carb off...... and to open the large butterflys i have to push really hard is it possible my butterflys are frozen? btw ive been starting my car with a screw driver to open the butterflys or it won't start at all....... Any idea's im oiling the carb joints and linkages now to see if thats the issue also i could not get fuel from the pump to the engine...... could i use my 283 fuel pump just to see if its the fuel pump....... AND the bowl of my carb is full of dirt..... I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THAT GOT THERE!
on a quad the first butterfly is your choke and the should only be closed when the carb is cold, the secondaries dont have butterflies those are air doors that stay closed for the most part until you harmer on it thats were the quad wail comes from.
dont pry on anything as to bend a throttle plate be gental, with todays gas you are probably srubbing your fuel tank kleen or you have a niebor who dosent like you, in any case dirt has to come out i would clean your tank a replace a filter in might take a few, lube up the carb with penetrating oil and gently work lose everthing should work freely

im talking when i pull on my linkage.... Nothing opens at all?
there was a big build up of dirt and what not! holding the butterflys closed i dipped the carb in oil LMAO i have a open vucket of oil.. soo the carb is lubbed up real good im expecting a big blue cloud coming out when i start it LMAO
Where did you get the carb, what # ? Sounds like secondary block off which is on choke side of carb or its frozen. I have a dozen right here beside me on the shelf and they are all opening well. Let me know if you want one, I have a tleast 6 '70-'74 good 350 carbs.

alright that sounds.i found an issue with my vacuum secondary as well it seem even when i plug the hole in the back with my thumb it still decompresses?
Was that 305 running when you got it? Maybe John know's something about the carb, what year it is etc...
What I know about the engine is very little..... A guy I work with said the history was..... A low mile junkyard 305 a guy bought and put in his truck, ran good, drove the truck then parked it (bought something else) Guy from work bought it never did anything with it so I don't know how long it sat for. I trusted him that it was a good runner and had hoped Jonathan would have little to no problems Sorry I don't have anymore info than that.....

Ooooo, I found a Quadrajet on my shelf coded for a 400 small block. That might be the one JD.
is that good?
Ya, you get to tell everybody you got a small block 400 carb, most cruise night lawyers will start arguing with you that there never was a small block 400. It's a good conversation starter.
I'm gonna disagree with chucking it tho. $20 gets you the Q-jet manual at Canadian tire. A busted carb that you're not relying on is the perfect platform for learning all about them.

my school has tons of q jets.... i was playing wioth them and i can see where my q jet is messed up.. on the other ones when i push the throttle the secondaries open =)
Ok, go back there and write down the numbers on any that start with 702 or 704. Send me the numbers and I will tell you which ones to grab. Chevy carbs have 90 degree fuel inlet Pontiac Buick Olds are straight inlet.
If you see 7040270 take it out of the pile and come directly to my house, I will pay you $200 for it.
