Powder Coating vs Urethane paint

Hi guys,

I have a bit of a dilema here..

For drivetrain parts, do you think powder coating will be resistant enough or I would be better using urethane paint?

I was told powder coating would be less resistant, but I am not sure anymore..

Any thoughts or first-hand experience?

ThanksSteve

I think powder coating is the most durable, but it may cost more than paint. I also think it's less forgiving than paint if it gets breached, as moisture will tend to travel further underneath it, lifting the plastic as it goes. Any nuts or areas of tight clearance should to be masked before coating as they will be fouled with the thick coating. I've heard it is also a bear to remove from places it shouldn't be. It seems to be more commonly used on suspension components.

Good epoxy primer and paint would be all a fair weather car would ever need imop, and if applied right, should also lay flatter, thinner and look more original than powdercoat.

Yeah....Powder coat is stronger and more expencive but less forgiving.

If it's going on a car that will never see snow or rain i'd say paint for sure.

If it was for a 4x4 that was gonna be abused id go powder coat.

But i'm a painter so it makes all the more sense to me to paint it.

No idea which coating is actually better but I went with powder coating.  I've been led to believe that the powder coating is more durable than paint.  Time will tell...

Here are some before and after pictures.  Had the frame and front end parts sandblasted and powder coated.  Very happy with the results biggrin

Thank you guys for your replies.

67SD396, very nice work..looking good :)

I am doing my own powder coating..so I think I will continue with that route.

I think I'll do a test and leave one part outside all winter and see if it will corrode or not.

I'll let you know.

Thanks again
Steve

Steve my spindles and front end parts on the 57 were done in powder 4 years ago and are holding up fine.

Plus one for powder coating.

There's a place in Winnipeg that will sandblast and powdercoat a frame (if it comes in degreased) for about 250 bucks. No brainer to me...

Ouch.

I've talked to a few guys here who have used this place and been real happy. Frame plus about 10-12 brackets, control arms, whatever, about $400-$450 depending on a few things such as item size and amount of work to blast.

I paid $350 just to get a frame blasted down here. I spent another $350 in materials to paint it myself. So the whole thing in powder including brackets for $450 would be an incredible deal.
