Incorrectly stamped VIN?

Hi, great site you have here. I've found a lot of good info.

I have a 64 Beaumont Custom 2 dr hardtop and I'm having trouble decoding the VIN. The tag on the door jamb is stamped 4353705XXXX. I decode this as 4 (year), 3537 (model), O (Oshawa, production plant), 5XXXX (sequential number off the assembly line). This model number, 3537 doesnt appear to exist.

This came about because I noticed the registration matches the tag EXCEPT for the 2nd digit. The registration lists the VIN as 4853705XXXX. My research tells me the sequence number 5XXXX is unique to each car from the plant for that model year, so I don't think it's a case of someone doing some "creative registration" work.

Is it possible GM incorrectly stamped my VIN plate?

I have attached a photo of the VIN tag. the 2nd digit is very clearly shown as a 3.

Thanks BeaumontGuru.

I thought it was a paperwork error at first like Carl suggested, but the numbers don't line up. I guess mistakes can be made at the factory just as easily as they can be made in an insurance office. I'm just surprised that I'm the first guy in nearly 50 years to notice it.

Further information as requested:

283 4 speed car in the car now (both non-original). I think it was originally a 3 speed on the column, but my gut tells me about half a dozen engines have been under the hood and the original is long gone.

I had a look at the trim tag on the firewall and it says this:

Style 8537 2-2-7

Body No. 833558

Paint W

Trim 971

B70 T86 U63

I guess according to the style number, it is indeed a 8537, Custom 2dr ht, 6 cylinder.  Is it normal that my Body No. doesnt match my sequence number in my VIN? Does anyone know what the 2-2-7 means?

I'm not a big numbers matching guy; more of a enjoy-what-I've-got guy. I'm just curious about the history of the car.

Apparently all the USA 62-67 Novas are that way as well. All the cowl tags say V8 car. The guys say the VIN tag is the only accurate way to determine a 6 or 8 originally.

I would say the registration has been made in error by the look of it.

Welcome here. More details on your car would be great for all us inquisitive types!

8537 is for a custom 6cyl 2dr HT,  so the registration is probably correct

Unless the car is a V8 then it is 8637

Looks to me that it is stamped incorrect,   strange, i wonder how they let that slip by at the factory

All 64 beaumont models start with an 8

I think your 3 on the tree is correct as there is no M35 (Powerglide) listed on the cowl tag.

I saw a 64 Malibu SS last spring that the door plate called a 6 cyl and the data plate called an 8 cyl.
Very clearly the engine was a 6 cyl. This was an American built car.
