Carl Stevenson

Carl expressed interest in buying an AM/FM radio that I bought a few years ago, even though it was in rough appearance, untested and in unknown working condition.  I sent pics asking for for the amount I paid for it and he then sent payment.

Well, to my surprise, there was a bonus in the envelope!  This was a very nice gesture and completely unexpected.  This is the mark of a great person going above and beyond and it is very much appreciated.

I regret that I missed meeting him in person last year.... by only minutes!   Carl, Thank you very much and your radio is on the way!

I spent time in that same cell!  It actually was roomier than the regular cells in Alcatraz but it sure didn't feel that way in the dark!

I guess the art of raising kids (not that I know much about it) is to remember that you were one once too and not to over react.

And speaking of member feedback I just want to add to the chorus at the risk of expanding Carl's head another hat size.  He must be quite a mental juggler as I do believe he  has developed and manages to mantain more people he can call friends on this forum than any one else (with maybe one other exception)

They way he does it is to give more than he has to with every one he talks to on here.  I've been a recipient of his thoughtfulness and generosity and it almost make me want to be less of a grumpy old man sometimes!

RE: Carl Stevenson

Thanks for posting that Carl.

I had PM'd Carl explaining that I was a bit hesitant to brag yet again about my kids online. Of course he just posted it up anyway!!!

Some days my kids cost me a lot of money because my head keeps swelling and I need to buy bigger hats all the time!

We didn't even know about this until we saw it in the local paper. I guess it's been on the Manitoba high school athletic association website for about a week already!

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Parker Stevenson of the Rosenort Redhawks basketball team is this weeks Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.

This 63 forward averaged 30 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals per game. He led his team to two tournament wins, earning MVP honors both times. He led the team to the Bronze medal at the Provincial A Basketball Championships where he was named player of the game twice and selected to the Provincial All-Star team. Coach Kevin Friesen states, Parker is a tremendous leader both on and off the court. He is an extremely hard worker and a big part of our teams success. He made a big off season commitment to develop his basketball skills and as a result I have seen tremendous growth in his ability and leadership, which was instrumental to our success this season. Parker is one of those players that is a joy to coach.

This grade 12 student maintains an average of 86%

It's exciting. He's had contact with a Christian college who wants him to come and play next year, but sadly, they don't do scholarships!!! However, he is hoping to attend University of Manitoba and I'm not so sure he's that level of player as far as basketball goes.

Funny thing is, I did NO sports in school except Grade 8 basketball. I hated sports! By then it was cars, cars, cars...

It's certainly a lot more exciting than when they get a ride home in a police car.

Quick story---

We live out in the country. About 10-12 years ago 4 kids where goofing around in a field with an SUV out behind our house, about 1/2 mile away. They didn't belong there and I knew it. I called the cops, then sent my wife and kids away for a ride in the car cause our kids where little and figured if they ended up in our yard, it could be ugly. Sure enough, the teens got stuck, walked to our house to use the phone and phoned some buddies for a ride. Then they walked our 1000' driveway out to the provincial road where the RCMP just "happened to drive by" exactly when they got to the road! Needless to say the cops where thrilled I had called as they had been looking for this group for a number of hours due to a number of incidents elsewhere the same day. One of the kids was allowed to call home for a ride. I didn't know him but when his dad arrived to pick him up and we recognized each other there was a look of shame on his face that I will never ever forget. I hope I never have to do something like that dad had to do that day. I just wanted to give that man a hug and tell him it was going to be ok, but I wasn't so sure it would be.

Days like this where both our kids achievements are recognized is better than just about anything in the world.

We all want the best for our kids but sometimes the road to that prize is awfully bumpy...

Well I can relate to both as I've had my ride home from high school in the police car but I will leave that one alone for now.  Was funny when I was a kid my mom had numerous heart palpatations and I didn't think she would live very long as it would last for hours.  I left home at 18 to live in the next province and I don't think she ever had another one.  She will be 91 next month and lives in her own house and still has her van to drive.  She didn't see any pictures of me in the paper for these kind of awards.  Fast forward to my kids and so far no police cars and they have provided some clips from the paper too.  Hopefully end result is good in both situations.  Sorry so far off thread but it hit the old memory bank when I saw the words police cruiser.

Well, I deserved a number of rides home in the back of the cop car but was lucky enough that it never happened. Maybe one of those rides would have smartened me up a lot sooner than age 27 when I finally put it all behind me...

I sometimes feel guilty that my life was so different than my children's life is. No, they are not saints, I don't have my head in the sand, but I do know enough about their life to know I was a lot more of a problem as a teen.

Yeah and I think as parents that is the obvious that we want things to be better for them than it was for us and one of those things is not riding in cruisers and everything that goes with it. Fortunately only time in jail for me was 3 months when I had the key and I also had the torch to make the doors fit better.

I did some time in solitary but it was only about 30 seconds at Alcatraz! I wish they would give every rebellious teen about 15 minutes in that darkness there to think about his future! Man that was scary. I am a restless person and jail would likely be the end of me.

And like you noted, another thread completely derailed.............. !!!

I'm laughing and blushing at the same time Ken!!! (Ok, the blushing was a lie. It seems I can't blush. Bugs my wife to no end!)

Thanks for the kinds words though.

Now I gotta hit the showers and I'll need extra shampoo since my head is one size bigger!

Gotta see if I can shake this throat thing and get my voice back for tomorrow. As a parts guy, I'm not a lot of good when I can't use a telephone!

Carl went and did it again. I bought what Carl told me was a beat up manual for next to nothing, postage cost more then the manual. I bought it for reference material but on perusing the manual i found the front section was missing or about 40-50 pg on a 5" thick book, go figure on a well used manual. I'm happy with the manual but i pm'd Carl if he knew where i could get copies of said pages. well he scanned a couple and managed to find another manual and get me the missing pages. Thanxs again Carl.

I was fortunate enough to sell it to someone who was patient and understanding Steve! Not everyone would have been as accepting...

I certainly should have checked that book over better before I shipped it!

Thanks for the good feedback guys!
