changing the door hinges on the 70 454 Laurentian

The drivers door hasn't closed right, and by talking to the owner who sold the car to Hillar, he said it never did close right.    At last years Alberta Iron Indians show, I had Werner take a look at it (many of you Calgary guys will know Werner).   I went by his house last year, and he adjusted the striker, but he said the hinges were shot.   I got a different pair of hinges from a Laurentian 4 dr sedan up by Bowden, and went to Werner's place today so he could look at the hinges, and rebuild them.  After he looked at them, he figured he likely had a set in his shop.   He did and they were in good shape (and even painted green), so we figured, ok, lets swap hinges.   Needless to say it's a bit of a job, and we had the door on and off at 6 or 7 times before everything lined up.   Here were are just prior to the last attempt.  The door closes real nice now - it sure helps to have someone who knows what they're doing!!!!

I have to do that on the monster door LeMans, I have some good hinges from a western car but it's not a job I was looking froward to. My drivers hinge is actually broken, it tossed the spring out a year ago and snapped the arm that keeps the door open.

How many hours did that take Clint?

Ray I did a couple before and its not a fun job.If you don't want to do it yourself, then if you ever delt with a bodyshop in the past then ask them if they could fit it in between jobs.It wouldn't cost to much.Sometimes i say to myself how much is my time worth.

3.5 hours, I acted as the strong back / weak mind apprentice.  With those big doors, I'm sure you can imagine how changing something 1/16" at one end moves the other end 3/4".

I I had to do it, I'd try to rig up a balanced sling of some kind coming off an engine hoist. Awsome car even with a door blown off!

They are heavy doors. But I just put pins and bushings in mine... The hinges were good. They only get bad when people don't lube and care for them!

I have done hundres of sets mostly S-10's and the full size GM trucks..... I was the hinge doctor at the dealer even though we had a body shop!

Like everything else, once you get use to them and know how the adjustments work, it will get easier!

Nice to put a face (or at least a partial face) to a name. I've never met Werner, but I have purchased an air cleaner assembly and 327 VC from him.
Awesome car. (Where do you keep them all?)
