ok after a day of tinkering i managed to get the e brake cables working again but eventually will need to replace them as the boots are torn. But at least they come off and on now.I checked the rear shoes and they seem about 50%,maybe the originals.Anyways did some searching online and found a raybestos part number of 2003R i beleive all 4 are the same.Rear shoes are 11 in drum 1 3/4 wide, came up with a part # of raybestos 228PG.The fronts i think are 11 inch by 2 in wide?I couldn't find a part #.I figured i would give my local napa store a shot first before i tried online. The brakes aren't terrible but maybe a good insurance policy to change them out.Does anyone have a part # for the fronts and the e cables?
I had the fronts off today to repack the bearings and it looks like the front brakes were done recently.Nice fresh blue paint on the shoes and lots of lining. The drums seem really decent as well.So other than one broken wheel stud and missing lugnut the fronts are good to go.I will try to find the stud and nut number online,i'm sure i've seen them before.Just new rear shoes, drums and cables and all is good.
Gave my local parts store a shot at finding the parts and they came up with almost everything i needed. The wheel stud and nuts were in stock, the new drums and shoes will be here tomorrow, nice. Now if they can just find the e brake cables that would be all i need to finish the brakes. The prices were as good as online and no shipping, bonus!!
ok got the fronts all cleaned up,drums repainted, bearings repacked, broken studs replaced.3 new lugnuts,2 new studs a whole 6.40 cents.2 new rear drums 61.00 each,a new set of rear shoes a bit pricey at 91.00 but hey i had them next day.I figured maybe i would do the shocks as well,Rears are about 60 each the fronts a bit more at 71.00 each but again in stock at the warehouse. The only thing i can't seem to find is a part number for the e brake cables. But for the rest found monroe and raybestos part numbers and the local bumper to bumper found the parts no problem.
Well a bit of a setback but nothing too major.I went to install the new rear shoes last night and they are slightly different. My car has a short shoe on one side and a longer one onthe other,These shoes are the same length both sides. All the holes are the same and they mount up properly but when i went to put the new drum on it won't fit over the shoes.i backed the adjuster all the way down but still don't fit.I did some more looking and found that the e brake cables are not releasing all the way.I thought i had them unseized but the passenger side seems to be catching still about an inch short of full release. So time to order new cables, thought maybe i could get by for a bit but no luck.Second i thought at first the cylinders might be seized so ended up taking them out and sure enough they were full of brown goop.Thankfully not seized,so after dis assembly and cleaning they are good to go again.Probably a good thing i caught i now.Anyways now to wait for the new parts to show up.Bought some buffing wheels for my bench grinder so i can polish up some of the trim.I did find some more rot in the rockers when i removed the gravel sheilds but a project for the winter i guess.I am hoping to get out and driving for a bit this summer and i'll do the body next winter.
What are the part numbers that you used to rebuild your brakes? Will they fit a US 1951 Pontiac Chieftain? I haven't been able to find new brake shoes NAPA down here doesn't show to have any.
