this was another way the after market came to the rescue with a cheaper look alike ?? vinly roof. Quite often applied by the used car dealer
When vinyl roof covers were a new thing on the market in the early 1960s, the aftermarket offered a spray on lookalike. Dealers were happy to do it.
Ford offered a black wrinkle 2-toned roof on the pickups in the late 1960s into the early 1970s that mimicked the vinyl top look. I remember seeing them new but haven't seen one in decades.

i have a 67 custom beaumont 2dht with a rock gaurd looking top it has these rubber belts under the sprayed paint to simulate the stiching seems running front to back from about 8" in from the drip rail, it has the chrome stips around the lower b piller that look stock untill you take the chrome off and the clips are screwed on ,
mine must have been the cheap version (no simulated seams) that car started my wifes (girl friend at the time ) love of cars she actually spent a week at my dads shop sanding and working on it while i was on a fishing trip at 17 or 18 years old i new i had a keeper .we now own another 67 beaumont and a 67 chevelle and both she couldnt get me to buy quick enough . god i wish i could find that first one (car ) still got the wife.
Back in 1967 when I had my 67 Beaumont 327 4 sp bench seat car, that is when the product came out
Our Body Man wanted to do one so seeing as my car was in the body shop we painted an imitation vinyl roof on it, there were many colors available and we painted it a light blue and being a custom we also painted it the same color in between the two moldings, was kind of cool, the only one like it.
Hi Gerry my first 67 looked just like the one in your picture when when my father gave it to me and said if you pay to fix it you can have it i had a body shop teacher help me skin the rear quarters and painted it red put the vinyl top over the stuko and had chrome reverse wheels with white letter tires. the trunk rusted out the summer i got married and i sold it .the kids dad got it fixed for 200. and i still regret selling it today. iam fortunate to have a hand painted picture of it done by a very well known canadian artist(Clause verboone) that delt with my dad and needed some work done so we did a trade its a cool reminder .

Just like that spray on "hair" (as seen on TV) to cover bald spots.
