1957 Pontiac decode????

Hi Guys

I'm looking for some help decoding a 1957 Pontiac I found.  The firewall tags have the following info.

Serial - 72037835471

Engine - 9V76399

Style - 2037

Body No. - 1749

Paint - 2409

B.S.O. - 213    340

Trim - 901

My limited knowledge on these cars suggests a 2 door hardtop with a V8 and standard tranny, with the original colour being blue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, does anyone know where to get quarter panels?  Are the US models the same as far as the quarter panels are concerned?  I know the front clip is shorter and the car itself is based on the US 1957 Chevy but will US quarters work?  I really would like to keep it with Pontiac sheetmetal instead of converting it to 57 Chevy panels.

Thanks, Steve.

Well I know mostly Buicks, but it's not that different for Pontiacs:

Serial - 72037835471
7 = 1957
2 = Pontiac
0 = car series, I don't have for Pontiac
37 = two door hardtop
8 = 8 cylinder engine
35471 = sequence number starting at 00001 for model year

Engine - 9V76399
9 = automatic trans
V = I don't have engine codes for Pontiac
76399 = sequence number

Style - 2037
see car serial above

Body No. - 1749
starting at 1 for each style for model year

Paint - 2409
2 = Pontiac
4 = two-tone, specific type
09 = Tropical Turquoise and Dover White
Tropical Turquoise = Ditzler DQE-1207
Dover White = Ditzler DQE-W8120

B.S.O. - 213 340, these are body specific option numbers
213 = Heavy duty springs and shock absorbers
340 = V8 engine

Trim - 901
I don't have Pontiac trim numbers

I will check my Sanford Evans data book when I get home tonight and see if I can fill in any of the missing information.

Hi Sean

Thanks for the info.  The paint codes really had me stumped.  I did find out that the 2037 is for the Laurentien 2 door hardtop.  The "V" apparently is for the 283 but I didn't know the 9 was for the automatic.  If you get the trim decoded that would be great but if you can't no problem.

Once again thanks for the help, Steve.

The Sanford Evans data book shows:

2037 = Pathfinder Deluxe 2dr Sport Coupe
2037D = Laurentian 2dr Sport Coupe

No trim codes, so someone else will have to give you the trim code.

Thanks for the info Sean.  I thought it was a Laurentien.  At least now I can look at some 57 brochures to get an idea what the interior looked like for a Pathfinder Deluxe.  I might be getting another 57 hardtop in a couple of weeks.  Would you mind taking a look at the data tag info?

Here's the numbers for the other 1957 Pontiac.

Engine #9V70386

Style #2037D

Body #939

Paint #2410

Trim #913

B.S.O.  213, 340

From what I've learned from Sean and the site it's a 1957 Laurentien 2 door hardtop.  Red with a Dover White cove.

SERIAL#

7 = 1957

2 = Pontiac

0 = car series???

37D = Laurentian 2dr Sport Coupe

8 = 8 cylinder engine

25034 = sequence number starting at 00001 for model year

ENGINE#

9 = Automatic

V = I think it denotes the V-8/283 engine

70386 = Sequence number

STYLE#

2037D = Laurentian 2dr Sport Coupe

BODY#

939 = starting at 1 for each style for model year

PAINT#

2410

2 = Pontiac
4 = two-tone, specific type
10 = Dover White and ??? Red

TRIM#

913 = ??????? The interior appears to be red with black inserts.

B.S.O.

213 = heavy duty springs and shock absorbers

340 = V8 Egine

Thanks to your previous info I just need the paint code for the Red paint if you have it Sean.  Any other sources for the trim codes?

Can we all please see some pictures of your 1957 Pontiac? Good luck with her. Any 1957 Pontiac saved is a good deed indeed. Cheers. George.

Hi George

I have to wait until I can borrow my buddies car hauler to get the cars home before I can post pics.  But I will as soon as possible(hopefully this coming weekend).  I bought the 1957 Pathfinder Deluxe 2 door sport coupe and it came with a 4 door parts car.  I need quarters for the Pathfinder if you can suggest any places.

I'm going to go see about the 2 door Laurentien this coming week.  The guy has 7 1957 Pontiacs in total.  A 4 door wagon, 2 door sedan, 2 door hardtop, Laurentien 2 door hardtop, 4 door hardtop, 4 door sedan, and a couple more.  He wants me to take all 7 but I'm not sure I want the hassle.  He lives 3.5 hours away so I'd have to haul all the salvagable cars and parts back to my place and I'm on a tight budget.  I'm waiting for a price to see if it's worth.

If the 4d wagon is solid I might be interested in it. I would love to do a rat rod so to speak one to just drive the crap out of.

Sorry bud, but i do not know of any 57 Pontiac quarter panels. I know someone in the Toronto, Ontario area that is a 57 PONTIAC expert and has many parts and connections. If you like i can P.M. you his phone number. He just may be able to help you in the right direction for the quarter panels or anything else you may be looking for. Good luck with the resto. Cheers. George.
