How do you add oil to the convertible hydraulic lift pump?

I have a 2+2 convertible and there's a small fluid leak. I know where the problem is, but before I change the right part I want to refill the pump. See the photo I provided; I believe the little black protrusion I circled should come out and oil should be added through there ... but I'm not sure. I tried to lightly pry it out but didn't want to break it since it didn't open up easily. Does anybody know what to do? With loss of hydraulic pressure the top will come down but needs assistance to close.

Any help and hints are appreciated. Cheers,

I replaced my lines 8 or 9 years ago, and had to refill the unit.   If I recall, the black plug you've circled was what I removed, and filled it with automatic transmission fluid.   Give it a little harder try and see if it will come out.

 Be carefull. It may break - hardened with age. Mine did and I had to make up a plug for I couldn't find one at the time. I took a small piece of hose and run a bolt down through it to expand it to make it seal. It worked well so I never pursued looking for the plug.

Just pull like hell on that black rubber plug,  it will come out,  its probably an inch long.

If it breaks, you can always self tap a bolt back in its place.

As in previous threads, be sure what fluid is in it. Some have brake fluid, some tranny

Yupppp...thats the one. On my 62, it is a screw in steel plug....I guess they started to cheap out in the mid 60s

I've heard that these pumps are largely unchanged throughout the years, and even across different makes of convertibles (F**d etc.).

I guess I gotta tilt that thing so the hole is on top; that's tricky too because of all the tubes attached kind of holding it in place. Any danger forcing it vertically? Seems like it's going to be tricker holding it upright to fill it than removing the black plug, especially with the top down so that I don't overfill it.

I filled mine in place, and it was VERY awkward.   I had a small funnel pushed into a slurpee straw that went into the hole.   It was quite a pain.

Go to peavey mart or similar and get a large syringe and some clear plastic tubing that will fit on the syringe.

don't overfill; only up to the plug.  Early cars used brake fluid. Usually by early to mid 60's tranny fluid was used. I'm told old brake fluid can smell  like rotton eggs ??

I used a pump oil can with a flexable tube, worked like a charm biggrin

Send your wife to the store and then go into the kitchen and get the turkey baster and it works well filling the top pump. Then clean it good and put it back before she comes home! Or you can buy one at the Dollar store.

Thanks for posting the manual pages, Lefty.   That is exactly the correct way to do it, and works great with no mess,  highly recomend that way.

Also,  i highly recomend swapping out for trans fluid,  less mess, wont eat paint, and wont absorb moisture in the system over time.
