First, a word to the wise. If you are fortunate enough to have one of these grilles, the center piece (chrome cross type affair with either a Chieftain red, or Fleetleader gold medallion in the center), please consider replacing the rigid top brace which bolts into the grille piece and onto the center hood support, with a rubber tang - instead of the solid L-bracket that is stock. I have two of them; one off my Chieftain and another from a Fleetleader, both 52's and both broken in the same place, just to the right of center, about 1 1/2" on the top edge. I am gonna' swap out the center section from my parts car to the Chieftain DX, becuase it is better quality - more pits, less fractures. Neither vehicle has sustained significant front-end trauma. To me it looks like the repeated slamming of the hood fractured the pot metal grille piece. It's almost identical.
When dismantling the Fleetleader, I found that the center grill support was screwed up from the bottom with a double screw bracket, thus holding the center piece to the lower bumper section. On top of the rearmost screw was a series of eight or so flat washers holdong up an L-bracket Do-Ray light, (orange in this case), which was positioned so as to shine through the center medallion and hooked into the headlight circuit. This would, of course, illuminate the center medallion whenever the headlights were turned on! Could it be a 'day2' mod that was meant to keep up with the Catalina crowd and their lighted Indian Head hood ornaments?
As soon as I get my grille mods done, I am going to consider this a 'day-2' deal and do it, because I don't know where to get my hands on a Kraco 8 track with those sexy blue lights. Yep, I am...,
