I don't see why it wouldn't work on HEI as the dist. has place for tach. wire. I've used same after mrkt. tach. on reg. coil & HEI w/no problems!! All it's doing is "reading" the pulse !!!!!!!!!!!!1

Original hood tach's absolutely will not work with HEI. I used an in dash tach from a 69 in my 70GTO but used the original points distributor. So I can't say for sure that it will or will not work with an HEI or aftermarket electronic distributor conversion. However my hunch is that an original in-dash tach will not work with HEI.
Changed my 64 Catalina over to "electronic" ign. conversion [use the same cao etc.] using the same tach. I had with Points set up!!! Sun pro Tach in 52 showed wiring for Points, & HEI no wiring changes, just hooked the wire that was going to external coil, to teminal on HEI that says "TACH" I know a few people that are running GM tachs. from the 60's on HEI's mostly the consol or OEM on mid 60 Pontiacs

It will work Chad but I know someone with a Beaumont once told me that after a while of having it hooked up to an HEI the tach died. Not sure that it was proven to be the problem but it appeared to be HEI related.

Exactly why I didn't suggest using it. I use my factory tach with a stock distributor and coil with a Crane module installed. Works great, with the benefits of electronic ignition.
I seem to remember that the Sun Super tachs would not work with HEI, but the Sun Super tach 2 would........I think I would check into it some more before trying to use a 1970 factory tach with HEI
