The listing says it is "irrepairable" because it had an underhood fire. I'm no Ford guy but once again, I find this sad. I don't see ANY reason why someone could not put a wiring harness in this car and drive it again.

Because somebody went thru ins,If they had of just put a harness in it them selfs it would'nt be there. But maybe this car has been up for sale for awhile with no luck of selling, and this was there way out. Just sayin,we all know it happens.
I agree go get a new painless wiring system and update everything make it safe reliable. The parts under hood are a easy fix and restore the engine bay.
My brothers first car was a 63 comet convertible... We were given the car free as a project...that was over 30 years ago! I was 8, helped with some of the work....we painted it in our attached garage! It had blue interior and I was wondering if this one here was it! There aren't too many around Winnipeg that I've seen.... Too bad that car is clearly very salvageable!!!
Nope, once it's branded it's for all of North America I'm told. That car is parts only. That is just sad...
I'm not sure that you can't lisence a branded car? A friend bought a 05 impals in 06; a Flordia car that had the Ontario owner ship stamped BRANDED. The car apparently been hit left front and had to pass an Ontario test of some sort. The only negative according to him was a lower resale. He initially paid $6000.00 when they were selling for $12-14000.00. The only problem he ever had was at 200,000 km a complete dash panel failure which was not an uncommon thing for this car. Traded the car in Flordia last winter on a new 2012 Impala
The way they tell it here, it can never be back on the road in North America. I have yet to talk to someone who has found a LEGAL way around it (!) but I would love to know if it can be done.
I maybe shouldn't have used the term branded because I think someone told me that some of the states use branded as a general term, not a term specifically meaning non-repairable such as this one is titled.

My understanding was that an unrepairable car in MB can never be licensed in MB again. I've heard many stories of cars not unlike this one that are shipped out of province, fixed and resold and re-registered in that province.
Now, the new owner will be looking for an old '63 beater for it's registerable tags.

Buddy here has been in the biz, auto wrecker for years. A few ago he had a 65 Mustang outside the office window, all that was wrong was the only glass left was the drivers wing window and one tailight, vandalized. ICBC, the provincial insurer wrote it off and cancelled the registration. no rust, nothing. Glass is expensive, but c'mon ! Under BC rules after that cancellation he's only alowed to sell a third of the vehicle to any buyer, lot of choked guys over that.. Oh, and right now he has a couple of trucks from this years Sicamous floods..low milage late models, same thing..cancelled for water damage..hhmm, the big ford's water line was part way up the tires, the hemi dodge about the same and so on.
I believe there are diff. ways insurance companies can brand a vehicle. I am curently driving a 2005 that was in an accident and the insurance wrote it off. It was bought and repaired, safetied and a branded title (brand rebuild follows it for ever now). All I had to do was send my insurance the copy of the safety and an appraisal. The appraisal shows a 20% value drop for the branded ownership.
In MB under MPI rules, all vehicles older then 1996 that have been deemed a total loss are branded as irrepairable. As are any vehicles that have had a second total loss regardless of type or extent of damage. There are exceptions as hail vehicles are mostly exempt from this rule and when sold through MPI they are a clean title. I'm not sure what other factors contribute to deeming an older vehicle as salvagable or irrepairable but I suspect it may be conversations and opinions of individual insurance adjusters following a tough MPI rule.
PS the comet doesn't need any wiring and is just as nice as it looks in the pictures
When purchasing any cars from MPI that are deemed irrepairable the Transfer of Ownership Document is not provided and only a purchase agreement with a statement of "for parts only irrepairable". The serial number of the vehicle is entered into their system as non registerable and I believe this extends North America wide. Scary stuff for old car guys leaving it to Insurance companies and individual adjusters to making judjements about what can and can't be fixed. Manitoba Public Insurance also has a policy on mouse damage total loss vehicles. If a car (or trailer in most cases) is a total loss from rodent damage it does not go through the public sale process and is crushed through a local shredder. Last year we lost a 55 Buick Century 2 door HT older restoration but still looked good and a 1969 Parisienne Convertible (a decent driver) to the crusher! No arbitration and gone for good. These are only two that I know of. There will have been more.
