My 1964 Chevelle Malibu SS Convertible Build Diary


Airdrie-20120625-00027.jpgIMG-20120625-00026.jpgHello everyone thought I would start a diary of my next build, I have never done this before so it will make me want to document the process. I picked up the car about 3 months ago and it has been sitting in the garage since then. I recievied the GM documentation on the the car iand it is a real SS with a 4 bbl 283, powerglide, only a few options on the car, but a power top is one of them. It is a canadian car and one of about 480 of this model.  Last night I slowly started the diassembly on the car, will post pics as I can. I will be pulling the boday off the fram and starch from scratch. The frame has been repaired so I am looking for one of those, if anyone can help out with that please let me know. Here are a few pics from the day I picked it up. The one big thing I have been trying to reasearch is the side molding, it has the ss and malibu moldings, all the research I have done say it should be one or thye other. The fellow I bought the car from swears when he was young he had one that was new with both sets of molding on the car, I would appreciate any imut on this.

Do the GM documents show it as being a 220 horse 4 barrel 283?

Looks like you have some muscle (or a couple hit men) to help out with your build by seeing the 2 guys in the background of the first picture . Cant wait to see the thread come together or should i say come apart

Nice cars, definately one of my favorites. About the body side moldings, it would have came with one or the other and not both (if it had your build sheet would have showed that). As far as the rest of the car the only other discrepencys I see is wrong SS hub cap and possibly wrong side view mirror but hard to tell, but all super easy to rectify Nice car and nice find, looks like you'll be having some fun this winter. So its a canadian car?   the GM docs show L77,  220 HP. cool

No, they never ever in a million years had both sets of trim,  if the car is a real SS it has upper trim only,  somebody added the center stuff for sure,  it is base malibu trim.

Interesting car.  i have  220 HP 64 wagon and i had a 64 beaumont with the L77 as well.  both canadian

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH.  The other one has a longer roof.

I'll say it again, that is COOL! There is just something about a 283/220, I can't explain it.

Quick question guys, the engine number on the build sheet is that supposed to match the number on the block? Old owner was told it was number matching but I see a different number on the passenger side under the head. I don't think it's the original block.

Yes, I believe it should but the 64's are different than later numbers.

Casting dates on the block?

Block casting is a 64-68 283.

Intake is a 66 casting for a 283, and the date stamp backs that up.

Your block casting date will be on the opposite side of that casting, should be letter/number/number/number.

I don't want to freak you out but, I don't think it's an original block either or maybe there is a "goof up" on your GM document. My '64's numbers match (both engine pad & doc.). On your GM document it says: Engine Number - 834514306confuse

Could u take a measurment for me??

With the top up from back top bow in the center down the rear widow to the body.

Should be around 20+in

That's what I think as well, it will make it easier putting in the blown 327 I have sitting around.

The measurement I get 22 3/4' that is from the last bow above the window down to the edge of the chrome moulding that is attached to the body

here are some pics of the recent work on my car, I have included a pic of the block I can not see any casting marks as to what year it is, am I missing something here? Got a new frame last week from a 65 el camino, now just need to shorten it and we are off to the races. gas tank exhaust and and a few more windows need to come out and then the car is ready to be blasted.
