One of the most popular upgrades is the Jeep Grand Cherokee box...bolts in and you just have to buy fittings to convert the metric box to your lines, and a new rag joint, those are readily available as well... You can find details of that swap on the Team Chevelle website...

My recently purchased 68 has all new suspension components except for the steering box. As there is a lot of play in the box, I would like to upgrade/rebuild the box. Any ideas as to whether or not to go with an aftermarket box, or a remanufactured one. It is currently a bit of a restomod, so I would like something that perfoms well and is reasonable tight and responsive. Suggestions and possible sources would be greatly appreciated.
Thats great thanks. Do you know if it is an upgraded box or just to stock specs? I have heard of some stock boxes being built with upgraded components to improve feel, firmness, turns to lock etc. It would be great because we have an office in Surrey that could likely ship it for free to me.
I spoke to a fella (who I think may have been a previous owner of truckers black rag?) who stated that his favorite upgrade was replacing the 66 Beaumont steering box with that from a Camaro. "Plug and play"?...

'64 Parisienne CS "barn find" - last on the road in '86 ... Owner Protection Plan booklet, original paint, original near-mint aqua interior, original aqua GM floor mats, original 283, factory posi, and original rust.
no need to modify hoses,, just grab a pump from 83?? ish GM.. they used a metric hose, but still the old style pump. Just need to change the hose female insert at the pump.

Well a reman 97 GC box from Rock Auto showed up today along with the ragjoint and adaptors from Lee Manufacturing. Now to get things installed. I will keep everyone updated. Blew me away that a "new" box was actually cheaper than one from the local auto wreckers!
Well everything went in today in adout 2 hours. Believe it or not, no surprises or complications. Even the original bolts were ok to be re-used. Steering wheel definitely has a lot less play, but will have to wait for spring to test things out.
Rag joint and inserts from Lee (70 bucks) remanufactured 1997 Grand Cherokee box from Rock Auto (80 bucks), Core (15 bucks), Shipping and handling.... 55 bucks. Looks almost identical to the factory box.
Well it has been installed and tested. No leaks and the steering is instantaneous. Absolutely no play in the wheel whatsoever. Looks like the stock pump will work just fine!
