THIS IS THE VERY RARE AND HARD TO FIND 1966 ENGINE.

REBUILT 1966 396 CHEVROLET GM BIG BLOCK ENGINE, BEAUMONT, CORVETTE, CHEVELLE.

this engine was completely professionally rebuilt by K+S Machine in Kelowna, B.C. but never installed due to the project car being sold.

the block casting number is 3855961 and when I looked it up it reads 1966 and with two bolt mains and either 325 or 360 hp.

The number stamped on the pad at the front of the passenger side head is TI203IVR hope this helps!

I don't understand the engine code. "IV" is a 325-horse 396 from a full-size passenger car with a Turbohydramatic, 1965-68. The "R" on the end throws me for a loop. I have heard of an "H" on the end in 1966 when an engine that normally would come with a Quadrajet instead came with an equivalent Holley.

Maybe the code is being misread and is really an "H". That would make sense, especially since in the ad they say it is a 1966.

The 1965 and early 1966 396 blocks used a different cam bearing setup. I wonder if that engine uses the early style cam?

I believe the R indicates Rochester. This was discussed on TEAMCHEVELLE some time ago. You are correct on it being for a big car too. I don't think any big cars had 360 HP?? Probably not the original intake for the engine.

CORRECTION. After looking closely I see it has a Q jet intake so that would indicate a big car 325 HP, as no big cars had 350 or 360 HP engines??

And the only 396 Corvettes were 425 HP, 1965 only.

Thanks
Randy

Yes, R is for Rochester, H for Holley and often neither letter was present, just two letters like the IV.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've ever seen a Holley engine without the H but I've sure seen lots of Rochester engines with no R.

I have the same block and the cam bore is not grooved . Mine is T0215IVR  325 hp impala engine. The chevy by the numbers book does show a IVH suffix code for a 325 hp holley carb engine but I do not think a holley would be put on a 325 hp engine.

Yes, in the US I've seen them Ian. I don't know about here but my friend in Nebraska has had at least a couple of 66 b bodies with a 396/325 with a Holley. It's in the US GM parts books too.

Holley carbs are also in the NHRA accepted carbs for 396 and 427 engines 1969 and older that we would normally see a Q-jet on. The only Holley oval port engines I've ever seen were 360 HP 396's but apparantly there were exceptions, possibly U.S. only.

Thanks
Randy

Thats some thing I was not aware of . Do you think it was an option ? Just wondering what determined what carb you got.

Any guys I've ever asked in the US say it seems to be totally random.

A friend of mine has this engine just down the street from our jobsite. Selling all his leftover 66 Beaumont stuff, he still has a couple of them. Will see if I can find a picture or two.
