Help with 52 Chieftain water pump leak, please.

It's been sixteen hours now since I discovered a minor coolant leak from around the water pump shaft.  Rebuild or replace is the ultimate question.  So, I opened the rad pet**** and drained the new coolant, then opened the pet**** on the driver's side of the block and nothing came out.  The rad has been dripping ever since, though.  Probed the rad outlet with a wire, still nothing and I have recovered only about half the coolant.  Confused would be putting it mildly.  Drip. drip, drip...,  Help?

Your block has likely plugged up the drain tap!! No big deal, remove the tap from block [un-screw] then take a small screwdriver & clean out the hole for tap, have bucket ready!!!! or as Bob said just take the Lwr. hose off!!! It's quicker

I would suggest you to remove your engine drain valve, block your lower and upper hose no matter how, remove the small hose on the water outlet on the engine head, push compress air by the 1/8 pipe hole left open by your engine drain valve. You will be suprise what will go out your engine if not freshly rebuilt. Repeat and fill your engine with water to transport the dirt out. You can use a garden hose to direct the dirt outside your engine compartment.

Fitz.

PS: but it do not fix your leak by the way.....

Can I give you my adress for the donation???biggrin

Rick & Andre.  I have a rebuilt water pump that was a spare from my since sold 1948 with an eight cylinder! It has says GM part number 509114 on it!  I have looked up that number in my 41-55 parts book but it is not shown! Perhaps one of you would know what it would fit and if it is any good to Rick, it is for sale for $40.00, plus shipping from Tillsonburg Ontario. Bob.

58pfan - thanks, but I took the one off my parts car, checked it out and aside from a light coat of rust, it appears to have little to no wobble in the shaft. Got some gasket material, cut a new one, slapped it on and no leak so far. Gonna' flush the block, if I ever find out how. It doesn't appear that the head has ever been removed, so if I can avoid it until I get her started, then that would be good. Wheel cylinders and hoses are in, master cylinder rebuilt, full of Lucas Hot Rod oil, AC 45s (nos) gapped and installed, and almost ready to fire her up. Need new exhaust of course, so the first start should be quite impressive for the neighbours. (If she goes, that is.)
