This is an interesting hypothesis about Low Production vehicles. It is true that Pontiac was one of the top selling automobiles in Canada in this era and often ranked #1. It goes without saying that overall production is the key to which models might be low production. Then it is purely subjective as to what exactly comprises low. I think 5 % or less is certainly low production, That would mean that 95% of the cars made were something else. I don't think anyone would dispute 5% being Low production. Then what about 10%, that's 90% being something else, that seems like a Low Percentage too, however it still remains subjective.
Data in our Registry shows at least 94,438 Canadian Pontiacs built in 1964, this is based on serial numbering logged. It is certainly foolhardy to think that the leading selling car in Canada was only 94,438 units but lets be conservative and say that's all that were built. We know 5,766 Custom Sports were built from the letter shown. This accounts for 6.1% of production. In other words 93.9% of Pontiacs built were not Custom Sports in 1964. Low Production ? I would think so.
To Pete's point, Pontiac sold many times more cars in the US, data is easily accessible on line and shows 715,261 1964 Pontiacs built. So Pete if your model is one of 9,000 or so then yes indeed it is very low production at 1.2% of Pontiacs made in 1964. The Catalina is therefore in fact extremely low production.

Thats interesting!!! My 64 Cat 2+2 was 1st.yr. production & a little over 9000 were produced, & most US Pontiac people say thats "LOW" production!!! So 5,766 is even lower!!!! Did the C/S come out begining of the model yr. or later????

5700 cars is NOT low production.......just think about it for a minute.......thats ALOT of cars....low production is like 250.
Custom Sport production ran for 3 years...64,65 & 66 ...was replaced in 67 with the 2&2.
Canadian Pontiacs were advertised as the "SUCCESS CAR" in that era & in the 60's,they actually OUTSOLD Canadian produced Chevrolets.
Thats all 2+2 production only, htp. & rag top!!!! Doesn't include any other Catalina models, so Ya, that is "LOW" compared to the TOTAL US production of the 64 Pontiac Lines!!!!!
so.. glad to hear the 64 Custom Sports aren't that rare...I've killed 3 of them for parts.....well ..actually only 2 , one I sold to be restored ?
but the 1 convertible I bought came with trim form 2 cars... so lets just say they must be gone .... too...
I have never killed a Custom Sport, but I'm in the middle of killing a plain-jane hardtop (well it was already dead). I've got used CS parts from a couple dead CSs (one from PEI, and one from New Brunswick). So there are at least 6 less CSs accounted for in Canada between Roger and I.

Pete, is that number for 2+2 hardtops or are the 2+2 convertibles included?

Oh sure, and around here, they all drag me through the mud for parting out big block cars

Carl, to your point, based on my sound logic as posted above it is proven that 1964 Custom Sports are indeed a low production car and therefore Roger's actions are tantamount to heresy. On the other hand Big Block car production is barely measureable so destruction of those must be viewed as extreme heresy.
I think it's TOTALLY OK to KILL a rusty, stripped or crashed WRECK as long as ALL of the good stuff is kept & used to make other similar cars BETTER! (thanks for the GOOD DOOR,Rog.....)
Seeing as we are having so much FUN with this......anybody got any other 64 Oshawa production figures? 409? Parisienne wagon?
