RE: 427 4 speed

Warren, do you have a picture of Donny's original GM dealer poster of the 68 SS427 with hideaways??

I don't but that's another piece of evidence too.

Does anyone have a picture of the cowl tag? That would show T83 if factory installed.

And regarding factory assembled T83 cars that were not Caprices...I've seen two in person, a SS427 custom coupe in a junkyard in PA. Been there since the 70's. Still had one of the headlight doors on it when my dad first found it. My dad also owns a 68 SS427 convertible with the original T83 setup. He bought the car in 78 from the 2nd owner, a kid who was driving it with a 68 vette 435 motor. The headlight setup was all intact when he bought it.

I also have a 1968 copy of the window sticker and the actual owner protection plan book from a plain 68 Impala convertible that was equipped with the option. It was built for the plant manager at Janesville and was one of a group built with the test run of TH350 transmissions. I'm sure others were made but how many? Less than 100? I'm surprised one hasn't surfaced in Canada with the docs yet. Seems like that's how some of these interesting Canadian cars are saved, when someone gets the docs, finds out what it has and buys/restores it.

If the car being discussed had them factory installed, it would def be on the Canada docs...and George probably would have made notation of "X # of 16xxx with T83". We should pool some money together and have him check the records for us. haha

That's the first time I've heard of that documented convertible with hideaways. But if it could be built at Janesville why not St. Therese? Debate is settled then.

I sure love 1968 SS427s and the Custom Coupe is lower production than the fastback for sure.  Two things that this car never left the factory with are those hood pins and the lack of body side mouldings.  Last time I saw it the cowl tag was pop rivetted on.  Not knocking this gentleman's car but if you have $60k - you can have my documented numbers match, never rusted, never hit loaded California SS427 convertible!

I love Cdn docs for Z24s - but they still have an incorrect note at the bottom regarding what is included in the Z24 option package.  It shows disc brakes as part of the package.  I discussed it with George - he said he saw it in an engineering specification document.

I have quite a pile of 68 Impala documents and I've checked all of my pre and post production engineering documents, the sales brochures (from Canada, France US, Mexico and Australia) , the finger tip fact books, the salesman film strips, etc etc etc - and for all the SS427s I've seen and the 9 I still own - disc brakes (J52) was never part of the Z24 package.  I've own 4 CDN Z24s with drum barkes and 3 US built Z24s with drum.

I wish George would change that cause it seems to undermine the overall credibility - but dont want to complain - he does such a great job and such a great guy.

On the hideways - dont get me started...

Hi guys,

I'm not well versed regarding the docs we get from George therefore, I have a question. Is the engine number listed supposed to be unique to every vehicle? I only ask because both docs above have the same engine number.

Is it the same due to them both having the same HP rating and 4 speed transmissions?

What colour is the car?  In this pic it looks like some kind of metallic purple or black with metallic in it.

I took the photos. Flash photography up that close highlights odd things that I can not explain. The car is most definitely black to my eye as most of the other shots show.

There are two sets of stamping on each block - one set (with engine codes) done as the engine is assembled in Tonowanda and a second line (with VIN stamping) done at the vehicle assembly plant.

The VIN stamping will  be different on each car for sure - but the engine code should be same for those two cars -  "IE" = 385hp 427 4 speed in full size car - with the excption that occassionally a CDN built car had a letter and number - e.g. "3S" rather than IE - I  owned a 68 427 fastback with this code and George documented it - this was in the old days when George used to send out the sheet entitled: "Monthly Listing of Vehicles SHipped"   - that document also confirmed the unusual engine code.

When I first got the car I thought it was a warranty job or restamp - but when George sent me the document it concluded it.  I wish I could find that car - I sold it to a guy in Hilton Head North Carolina - was a Jade Gold Metallic 68 Impala fastback bench seat 4 speed 427 with tach, posi, discs, wood wheel.  I tracked down the original owner who said the car was used as an "audit car" at St. Therese so QC and QA tests were done on it during assembly.

Blah blah blah
