What kind of brakes do I have????


I recently tracked down and purchased the car my dad owned as a kid the eventually lead me to be a huge Pontiac fan.  The plan is to surprise him with it next month.  The car is an all original 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix. It has 53000 original miles 389 (american) hydromatic, power steering windows, seats antenna and brakes.  Bad brakes....no pedal.  I have determined that the booster is ruined.  It looks like the MC leaked into it and may have rotted out the diaphram.  The booster mounts to the firewall with 4 bolts and has 4 bolts that mounts to the master cylinder.  It is black in color and the vacuum intake rises up from the back and T's off and carries on to the fender somewhere.  The MC is a single resevoir that is square and has a small black screw on lid.  I need to find a new booster or a rebuild kit if possible, I have been told its a Bendix, a Moraine and a Treadle Vac.  Does anyone know what I have here?

That's what I was thinking, the Bendix.  A brake shop mentioned to me that it was a Treadle because the two housing pieces screwed together, but the master cylinder does not resemble one at all.  Plus it appears that they stopped using the traedle after '58.  Now the hard part, finding one.  I heard Cardone is the place to go, but they cannot get one.

I picked it up right here in Regina where the car has spent it's entire life.  It still has the pot metal Midwest Motors dealer badge on it.  It was right under my nose for the last 17 years an

Looks so old school country with that barn in the background and that beautiful Pontiac, really nice picture, I live in Sydney Australia and I rarely ever see snow, a barn and a Pontiac especially in all in one scene.

I live in Regina Sask and snow is all I've seen since October!!! Believe it or not that picture was taken two weeks ago, and since then that barn has been snowed in and I can't even access the car. We've had almost 200 cm of snow this year, and last year at this time I had my 64 Safari on the streets for two weeks. What a year man......

Well guys I managed to dig my way into that barn and pulled the master cylinder off the car. Removing it when I pulled the booster would have made much more sense and would have caused me a lot less grief. But that's not how I operate!!! I packed it all up and sent it off to John Stuart for a complete rebuild. Thank you all for your helpful advise. Anybody know how to make spring come to the prairies?

Amazing how different other parts of the world is and how others live. Too cold for me lol but great pic.
