Getting the 66 Grande roadworthy- the home stretch- I hope

Hi guys I've been a bit quieter than usual due to actually having very little to say, working on and off, but also partly because I actually have been working on the car for a change!  I figure I want to have this thing roadworthy by May 17th, for the Victoria day weekend.  Maybe a bold and foolish statement as there is still quite a bit to do....

I started seriously earlier this week when I  finally realized I needed to get off my pudgy butt.  (Partly thanks to Carl but also partly thanks, surprisingly, to my wife who actually said the other day, Why don't you actually do some work on your car;you're running out of excuses ya know!")

So here is what I have managed to do so far this week:

(Previously I had stirred myself out of the winter lethargy enough rebuild the power windows and weatherstripping on the passenger side of the car)

Noticed i had a set of door edge guards that were really nice on one of the parts cars so put them on mine.  Not entirely sure i like the look so the jury is out on that yet.  The door gap is kindof uneven on the car on both sides (maybe early production glitches?) and they make it look more so I think.

-Pulled the dash out along with the wiring harnesses. Cleaned the mouse crap out i hadn't been able to find until then)  Bleach, face mask and so forth.

- Checked all the  parts dashes i had for the best gauges, panels etc.

- Turns out my original was the best.  (no bubbles in the chrome, woodgrain not very weathered) Also interesting to note that the various production dates of the 66 dashes were molded into the top passenger corner so makes it kind of cool to see when the various ones I had were made.  Mine was the earliest as I thought it would be (July 26 65)

-Held my breath, used Carls Tach template and drilled it out to install the rebuilt tach.  Worked out great!   Whew!

-Cleaned the bare dash thoroughly and reinstalled the best stuff i had including an NOS gas gauge I had been saving for this.

-Polished out most of the scratches in the speedo with oil and temp gauges i had blessedly acquired recently.  Still have to figure out which wires go to where although I think Carl has posted that somewhere back

-Bench tested all my radios and reverb units till i found a set that worked. I think I'll have to use the 68 AM/FM I have as my 66 one is dead.  I actually like the look of the 68 one better as the face is the kind that flips from AM to FM as you turn the right hand knob.  Looks cleaner somehow than the 66 and the chrome is much better on it.

-Found the best Grande Parisienne dash panel insert of the three I had to pick from and put it in.

-Pulled out my spare wiring harness and checked it against my original to see which one I would use.  Turns out the spare has a seriously melted wire and it seems to be missing the AC connector so decided to use my original with a bit of refurbishing.  The fuse box tangs are horribly rusty but I think I can get them cleaned up OK.

-Sandblasted and painted a pair of 15 by 7' rallys so i can get a pair of 255/60 15's installed for the back.  The others just looked too small in the rear opening. I also installed the 4 different variations of ralley caps I have (cop car style, 1967/68 style, later style and the spinner style and polled the family to get their input.  So far the custom jobs I made with the 66 Grande spinners is the choice I'm happy to say.

- Pulled out all the floor insulation, something I should have done a long time ago, cleaned the floor and found a bit more rust than I would have liked.  Oddly enough the passenger side is worse than the drivers side which in my experience is usually the opposite.  Will have to check parts cars for the best passenger floor to see if it is worth cutting out for panels. Job for tomorrow

So basically I have to reinstall the complete interior plus headliner which I have never done before.  (My plan is to take out the perfect black headliner from the 67 Grande parts car I picked up in Rocky last year-not sure how tricky that is without wrecking it), Still have to do weather stripping on the driver door side and rebuilding the power windows on that side.  I  also have to put in air shocks and wire up the 700 r4 so it will shift properly. Then its rebuild the wiper assembly, install the windshield and get a wheel alignment.

Getting the AC working is going to be a job for an experienced AC guy sometime this summer I hope.  I have a guy located in Edmonton a couple of years ago and I hope hes still in business.  Probably won't be cheap but I just don't want to mess with it. I will try to get all the underdash stuff in good shape so he'll just have to work under the hood.  Must test the heater core now so i won't have to pull it out later!

I'll have to get an out of province inspection done. The guy that I will take it to used to have a 66 Grande that he talks about all the time so I think he'll be easy to deal with.

Other than that that, drive it and fix bugs which I hope will be small.

Do you guys think I can make it, assuming life or wife doesn't get in my way?

Here are some pics.  If you want more just ask!

I blowed up your pics Ken!

Nice work, keep it up. I wish I would have had the health and the time for cars lately. You're making me jealous.

I gotta say, I think you're being awful optimistic to have that done in two weeks. Not to discourage you but that will be a handful.

That dash sure is purdy.....

Glad the tach template worked out for you. I was sure it would. Those specs came from an original tach dash.

You should find the gauge wiring to be very simple. All the colours etc should jive with what you have going in to the original connector for the idiot light dash. Solder and heat shrink, we better not see any of those crimp connectors in any of your pictures!

Which wire is melted in your harness? I wonder if it's the same issue mine had?

My passenger floor was also the problem area. I never touched the driver's side. I'm pretty sure it was a windshield leak because when I removed the windshield the butyl was pretty much doing nothing.

Again, nice work Ken. Glad to see you hard at it.

Thanks guys, yeah the 68 radio is a perfect fit in the 66 dash.  Even the buttons look pretty darn close. If you need some 66 style knobs I have some spares.

Carl, the melted wire was the brown one that comes out of the igniton switch. Sorry to hear you're feeling low. I know you'll bounce  back soon.  For me the good weather is coinciding with me feeling great so givin' er is the plan. Unfortunately I have to lose tomorrow as i have to work during the day and MC a retirement party at night.  I agree its a tight schedule but the only way i actually work is under  pressure which is why I decided to post this stuff.

The only parts of the speedo head wiring i'm not sure of is the wires for the two gauges.  Someone had cut the ones off on my car and installed aftermaket ones so i guess I'll have to run new wires from the factory gauges to the sending units.  Which colour goes to which sending unit? (Probably a dumb quesiton but I'll ask just to be sure.

Here is a picture of the rusty fuse box (kind of out of focus, sorry)

Double green, one green goes to the temp sender, other green goes to the green off the back of the ignition switch. I just deleted the one to the back of the ignition switch. Its sole purpose is to test the temp gauge in "crank" position.

Blue with white stripe goes to that unobtanium oil sending unit.

And a refresher in case you get stumped and I'm not around to answer----

Oh, I still have to work 4 days a week, and cabin season is supposed to arrive SOME time this year, maybe...................

It's busy at work so I have pretty much no CP time during the day.

And I sure as heck don't ever want internet at the lake!

Sorry, but I had a laugh when i saw your wiring tree. I'm with you all the way on the work, the surprises etc. that have to be addressed before our cars are roadworthy. You are doing a excellent job and the best thing is you are still committed. The guys on this site gave me lots of encouragement when I was working on my car and their advice and comments help me continue when you become lost in work, and you know we never really completely finish and that is a good thing.

Thanks i appreciate the good wishes. its actually due to this forum that I am still as committed (found out lots of neat info on the car!) as as far behind as I am (lots of stuff to talk about!) You noted, I think, that I'm using the world roadworthy rather than finished because two aren't really the same. Roadworthy is attainable, finished is probably not.

Howdy guys, I feel that i have to explain my somewhat extended  absence as i was on kind of a roll for a while there.  I got back late last night from an unscheduled callout with the air tankers in Alberta. The spring hazard had the boys at the Alberta Provincial Fire Control Centre start some of the groups early.  I worked with a Convair 580 and in a Turbo Commander birddog (control) airplane for a couple of days and then moved over to an Lockheed Electra tanker for about 4 days.  They then asked me to move over to a group of  4 Airtractor 802's on floats which are my favorite airtanker actually even though they are kind of small.  In this airtanker group I got to run the show in a Cesssna Caravan which is also my favorite control aircraft as it is roomy tough, capatible with the tankers and can fly for longer than my bladder can.

We worked the Nordegg fire, which some of you may have heard of. The village had been evacuated and we were trying to keep the fire from overrunning it. We put in about 18 hours over the fire in two days (and a bit of a third) and I must say we left it looking a lot cooler than we found it.  I'm not actually allowed to post pictures of the work (guvvy property) but suffice it say that there were some pretty intense moments especially as I also had to be the air controller for up to 6 airtankers that were skimming off a lake about 2 miles away from the fire, 2 other larger ones (Electra) that bought in retardent from Rocky Mountain House and 7 or 8 bucketting helicoptors plus recon machines all in a fire that was about 300 acres in size.  (in the foothills yet!)

Total concentration! It was a literal aerial ballet.  What a great job, especially the flights up and back from Calgary to Nordegg at about 9000 feet ASL through the foothills while looking at the front range of the rockies  just off to the west.

I'm still kind of pumped and may be bragging a bit but its not every day anybody gets to have that much fun and fear at the same time.

Now back to the Poncho now that I have have fixed my 90 year old dads electric buggy today.  (He ran into a curb and bent a wheel backwards )  Times a wastin!

With forest fires, when it comes down to it,  there are only two things you can actually do, pound the heck out of it or run away!   I'm pretty lucky in the airplane; we can always leave real fast if we have to.

Speaking of fast though (smooth segue) I stuck in the back seat and new carpet tonight and took my stepson for a quick rip. (and did a nice power drift in the grass)

It's getting to look more and more  like a car again with everypart i put back on.  I still have to put the wiring harness in tomorrow and the dash to get it ready for a wheel alignment anf windshield install on Thursday.  So close i can smell it!

Driving this weekend is possible if I don't hit any snags!

Well, here's the latest.  Put in the back seat and the carpet and then the dash and wiring harness.  Hooked it all up at about 2 in the morning last wednesday night and so far the only things that work are the park lights, headlights, license plate light, one taillight, the glove box light and the cigarette lighter.  Can't get it to even crank over. Been kind of busy on fries so I;m just trying to check a circuit at a time.

Kind of puzzled about the lack of cranking so I will have to pull the harness off at the fuse box and check those circuits.  Once it runs and the radio works the rest will be details!

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

I am wondering if you have the main power wire off your horn relay hooked up. Just a guess at this point. I need to study the wiring diagram.

That could also be but I'm assuming he means he has a bigger problem. He seems to mean no wipers, radio, power options (windows), heater, none of that working either.

Hi guys, thanks for the discussion.  A lot of that astuff isn't even hooked up yet (Like wipers and heater power windows) so I'm not too worried about those  One thing i just recalled though  was that when I bought the car it had a starter button hooked up under the dash. (Ie. someone had bypassed the harness and hooked it up direct to the solenoid)) I thought it was the ignition switch gone bad so I swapped it out for a good one as part of the rebuidl but now I'm wondering it it wasn't a wire in the harness to the solenoid that was bad.  I'll check that tomorrrow and pull out the harness again if I have to. Its not too late yet.

I bypassed the neutral safety switch by the way just to see if that was it.

Is your dash pad still off and windshield out? That will sure help testing for power if you can work from the top.

I would test for 12 volts at the ignition switch once you confirm that there is 12 volts leaving the horn relay to power everything inside.

Maybe put a test light on all the fuses, ignition switch etc and post up what you find out?

Yeah affirmative on the accessability.  I'm not real strong on wiring (although I did do my 39 Buick from scratch) so i will proceed one step at a time.  Thanks for the help guys.  I'm sure we'll be talking more.

OK, update for tonight.  Found the power cable to the horn relay that I had forgotten to put on and put it on. (thanks guys) It really didn't change anything  weirdly enough.  Fixed one back taillight socket quickly (thanks to parts cars.)  I also checked my fusible link wire to the coil and its passing 12 volts when the ignition is on but its still wouldn't crank over. I jumped the solenoid and it started right up and shut off with the key so i'm really thinkijg I have a bad wire from the ignition to the firewall in the harness, considering I tested the swtich before i put it in. Easy enough to fix now.

Once it started running I had dash lights and the tach is working although its seems to cut out if i fiddle with the dash light rheostat for some odd reason.  No horn or signal lights yet but brakes and tails are good (and look pretty cool through those louvers)

Tomorrow i will check the bad wire, install the sending units for the oil and temp (still running off the old aftermarket gauges, replace the ammeter (i seemed have fried it as its sitting way over in the discharge permanently) and put in a wiper motor and get that all set up.

Progress is being made!

Good, things are rolling!

Put a test light on the "start" terminal (inside one on solenoid) and see if it lights up when you hit "crank" on the ignition. If it does but you still have no start, the voltage must be too low to pull in the solenoid. And if that is the case, good luck finding the problem... As they say, "Ask me how I know".

I think I'll replace the wire right from the switch to the firewall.  As I  recall the car had a starter button wired in to deal with the same problem a long time ago.  I have a feeling this car was not all that perfect from the factory or started to get defective pretty quickly. I also remember when I took it apart that  the blower fan had fallen off the shaft of the motor a long time ago whch must have meant for some pretty chilly winters in this thing and a total lack of AC air.

Those early production cars had their problems i think.
