Basic operating instructions ...help!

1. regular fuel will be sufficient.   No need for lead additive, that was an old wives tale.

2. There is no oil filter.  To change oil simply remove the drain plug on the oil pan.  To add, there must be an oil cap on the valve cover or somewhere up there.

3. yup, you've got it right. You may need to depress the gas pedal before pulling the choke.  I'd suggest pumping it a couple times to shoot some gas into the intake, while the gas pedal is down pull the choke closed, then lift your foot.  turn the key, and press the button.  If you're an old KISS fan, you can hear the sequence at the beginning of "Detroit Rock City".

If the Chieftain has sat for a week you have to PUMP the Pi$$ out of it while cranking it over, as the gas evapourates out of the carb. My 64 has manual choke & I usually give it 2 pumps while pulling out the choke all the way, as soon as it fires push choke in a bit & keep reducing it as it warms up. Pump the "snot" out of it, after a week as it takes alot to fill both 4 bbls back up!! You'll find out what it likes best, each vehicle has it's own quirks!!!!!!  I still put a bottle of "lead add." in the 64 every 3 rd. tank full,[ dump the whole thing in] as it's the valve seats that take a "Hammering" if you do long hwy. runs, which I do!!!  The 52 with SBC has the later heads & don't need to do that!! Some say Old Wives tale, but my Machine shop showed me some heads with the seats just pounded right up in the head from NO LEAD being used!! I'll play it safe. Pete

Hi all, I have some basic questions, that might sound silly to you seasoned owners. confuse

i have never drive or driven something this old. So I have some basic questions, try not to laugh.  I have a 51 chieftain automatic 6.

1. What type of gas does it use, do I need to add a lead additive, if so what is the ratio?

2. How do I add or change the oil? There is no filter that I can see.

3. To start do I pull the choke, turn the key, and then press the button?

Thanks for your help. My next post will be on how to toast and butter bread.
