fuel tank sender ohms

i under stand my fuel tank sender should be a 0-30 ohms unit

should it read "0" at the empty and "30" at the full position ?

not sure if my problem is the sender of the gauge

thanks

What problem are you having? Staying empty or full? If you have an open in the circuit the gauge will read overfull. If you have a grounded circuit the gauge will read empty. If your float is broken the gauge also will read empty. To test if your gauge is OK disconnect the sender wire - should read overfull, then ground the wire - should read empty.

i have 3 spare fuel gauges so i will start checking tomorrow.,
i was having a problem with the gauge starting off past the full mark
\then dropping to 1/4 when empty (think it might be a 90 ohm)
im going to remove it tomorrow and meter it.
im testing my spares with an old sender that also may be faulty
so im going to pick up a new one and start from there

i finally replaced my clock with a new quartz Chevy 2 one
see new thread.,

solution for problem
sender is a 0-90 ohm unit instead of a 0-30 unit
this site tells to put a 50 ohm 5 watt resistor in series with the brown wire
from the sender at the sender or the gauge.

here are pics showqing why my gauge showed full until 90 % empty.

1st one is sender showing empty

2nd is where it should show 1/4 but meter says 30 ohms so gauge shows full

3rd is gauge in full and meter shows 90 ohms.

so between full and 1/4 full gauge stays on full. now off the radio shack for a resistor or maybe find a proper sender at Monroe swap meet on Sat.
