2 different types of 327 engines?

Hi guys, I am selling my car and this guy wants to know what version of 327 I have...weather its  8.75:1 compression ratio or a 10:1 with hydrulic valve-lifters...Probably a really dumb question for me to ask but how do I tell?

Thanks,

Chris

If it has this style of cylinder head it would be the 10:1,  275 H.P. engine. These are commonly refered to as Fuel Injection or Camel hump heads.

Note the humps on the front surface.

To decipher the 327, can you post the casting number on the block, driver's side, behind the cylinder head just in front of where the transmission attaches? Also, passenger side front, just in front of the cylinder head, there's some numbers stamped that would help. Annnnnnnnnd the casting number of the cylinder head (must remove valve cover to see it) would help too.

As far as the posi-trac, jack up the car to get both rear wheels off the ground, put the trans in neutral, grab one back tire and turn it. If the other side turns the same direction, posi-trac, if the other side sits still or spins the other way, no posi-trac.

Beaumonts weren't available with a 327 2bbl. from the factory. Certainly possible it's been swapped.

Thanks

Randy

Agreed, only full size Pontiacs had it in 68.

Look on the underside of the trunk lid ... if it has posi, it still may have a "posi sticker" on it.

Low compression 250hp, 4 bbl 327's are listed in the spec charts for 1968 Beaumonts and Chevelles.

Thanks
Randy

I can't prove it yet Randy but I bet that is a US chart and I bet you will find that engine was never offered in Canada in full size Chev, Chevelle or Nova.

The engine code will hold the key as to the version you have (low or high compression). Look on the machined pad on the front of the block just below the deck surface where the right side head  meets it.

Regarding Positraction, originally the oil fill plug on the differential would have had a little metal tag sticking out that mounted like a washer in the plug hole. It would state something to the effect of using GM Positraction additive when refilling.

The low compression 4-barrel 327 250-horse was offered in Canada as well as the U.S. in 1968 on full-size Chevrolets, Chevelles as well as Beaumonts as RPO L74. The 2-barrel version was the base engine in the Camaro from 1967 to early 1969, plus it was the base V8 on 1968 Canadian Pontiacs (I don't need to say full size since I said Canadian Pontiac biggrin ).

The high compression 4-barrel 275-horse version was offered in 1967/68 on all Canadian & U.S. Chevrolets, Chevelles, Chevy IIs, Camaros; plus all 1967/68 Canadian Pontiacs, Beaumonts & Acadians as RPO L30.

The heads are the only difference from the 250 and 275 HP 327 engine in 68. They shared the same block ,pistons, intake , carb and cam. The 250 hp would have used head 3917293 1.72/1.50 valve size and a larger 75.340 CC chamber to lower the compression and the 275 HP used the #1 version of the 3917291 head 1.94/1.50 valves with a smaller chamber of 63.305 CC. Like Randy said the head will be the big factor of what engine you have.

I know what you are saying Carl, as I don't think I have ever personally seen a 1968 250 hp, 327 but I see them listed in Beaumont brochures.

I'll accept any proof you declare as brochures can sometimes be inaccurate or incomplete. Like the 1969 255 hp 350 4bbl NHRA special.

We have discussed the earlier 250 hp, 327 that used 283 style heads. We both agreed that must have been a U.S. version as we have seen them in U.S. sold vehicles but never Canadian market cars. The 250 hp, 327 Canadian cars always have the F.I style heads.

Thanks

Randy
