found the miss fire in 52

After pulling what little hair I have left out, I found the problem, actually 2 things!!!  Checked out the fuel, came back as 8% ethanol,no water in it, fuel pump flow & pressure was good. So into the distributor, HEI cap was good [new] & then I looked at the rotor [new too] the metal strip had "cracked" 1/2 way from centre button to point, arcing & moving sideways hitting on wrong cyl. easy fix, then i checked the Vac. adv. diaphram. NOT WORKING, wouldn't pull with vac. so no vac adv. i was able to find another vac dash pot & installed it. Took car for test run with centre section of grille removed for more air flow & it ran at 160F to 170 down the road!!  Installed the grille & another test ran at 165 [still good] pulled over & idled till it hit 190 then out on the road, came back to 165. It wouldn't do that before, whatever it went to it stayed there!!!! Runs "REALLY" strong!!  I never thought to check the vac. adv. as the dist. came out of a running engine, & NAPA made good on the rotor & upgraded it to a better one, as only had 1200 mi on it!!! Tested the dash guage with "infared gun" on Int. manifold by sender unit & guage reads 5 deg. high [ not bad for Sun-Pro guage made in China] suspect the 1st. rotor may have come from there too!!!! Happy Camper now that I found it, gas mi. seems better too!!!   Pete

The infrared gun will read the surface temperature of the manifold - and it is likely a couple degrees cooler than the internal temperature, so your gauge is probably closer than you think.

GM HEI distributors can be bad for both vacuum advance & mechanical advance mechanisms sticking. I've seen several distributors where the mech advance was completely locked up.

Like unclebernie said - "feels good to figure out these issues". Frustrating during the actual figuring stage, but rewarding when you get it resolved.

Have fun!

Always feel good when one is able to reason through the problem and over come it. Just have to keep an open mind and check everything possible. And as you've found out it isn't always just 1 thing.
Persistance usually pays off.

Yep, ran cool last night to cruise in in Port Perry, 150 cars turned out. I could have 'sworn' it was the rad, but the guy was right, on saying it would COOL it, & it was mechanical. Sure didn't want to have to do another radiator, after having this one "BUILT" The Ol Torpedo back is "SCARY FAST" & hooks up pretty good. OH Cops drove thru the lot behind where we were parked last night, punching in all the lic. plate# that were backed up to the fence???? Mine included??? still trying to figure out WHY??? Pete

Great to hear Pete, and glad, despite the hair loss, that it turned out
to be kinda simple/cheap to fix.

Hmm, ALL the liscence plates eh..
Ah, it's the start of a new Port Perry Rod Registry !
And you got in on the first edition !
