NIce work James. You need hard seats to run the sh!@@# gas we have today(unleaded). Those are good heads,I would use them. smileI run 487's which are basically the same but a 74cc chamber vs a 64cc on the 186's. Use flat top pistons in your engine build to keep compression around  10:1. Keep us up to date brother.!

The torched hole is factory, yes. Amazing but they either used that or some kind of plasma cutter at the factory on the SS cars.

The hump between auto and manual is completely different. Let me see if I can find pics.

Here is a photo of the factory tunnel and I'm sure the car had a power glide. I would like to put a 700r4 in the car, the consul I have is for a automatic. I see a extra bracket at the back and new floor is missing a bracket in front ?P1060670.JPGP1060744.JPG

Parts day, I picked up the new floor, trunk side panels and drain plugs for the floor. Everything looks good, braces are on the floor as well as seat mount bolts. My question is the trans tunnel, the new pan is the same as what is in the car now which is all that is available other than a column shift tunnel. Is the tunnel design the same for both auto floor shift and standard trans. If you look on my original floor it looks like someone took a torch to the under side but on the inside it looks factory ???? Your original hump is most certainly from an automatic, yes. I can't explain why no front bracket on the new floor though.

I'll dig out my consul and shifter and see how it fits on the new pan. Now I can do some sand blasting.

There are two major types of GM posi from the muscle era. Clutch and cone. Attached is a picture of a clutch type with coil tension springs, it's some form of BOP axle (10bolt cover 12 bolt carrier)HPIM0849a.JPG

If anyone has a picture of the cone and S spring please pitch in.

I took the cover off my diff today, curious to see what was inside.  This is what I found, don't know my Chevy diffs very well but doesn't look like a posi to me. I sanded down the top of the axle tubes to see if there were any ID numbers, couldn't find anything maybe one of you CP'ers can help me out.....would they be on the center section ?P1060834.JPGP1060835.JPG

So can what I have be made into a posi unit or do I need a whole different carrier ? This must be the other style, which is better ?12bolds1.jpg

That is a clutch type, similar to the one I posted but with an S spring to preload the clutches. I may stand corrected but I believe the cone style is used up to about 70 in the BOP axles as I've heard a lot of griping about the cone clutches from the GTO/Firebird fraternity.

Unfortunately the carrier is unique to only posi or only to non-posi and the internals can not be interchanged.
