New Canadian made fuel tank for 1966

Got my new Spectra Premium Industries fuel tank today. Comparing it to the original, it looks excellent, every little dimple etc included.

And my favourite part of all.....

Made in canada all the way,

You know something,  i was doing some wiring last night,  i had a bunch of Grote brand wire on spools that i bought from Princess about 10 years ago or more,  all be damned,  they all are made in canada!

Now the more recent spools are made in china or tiawan for princess.  sad sad sad.

Interesting thing with this tank was I could have ordered a stainless tank for 10 bucks more. You can guess why I didn't...

Interesting about the wire. I'll have to check the stuff we're getting at work. We do a lot of Grote wire. I can pretty much guess what it will be when you say that.

As far as the tank, I think I'll just wash the outside and clearcoat it like I've done in the past. I'd rather have that over an imported stainless tank.

Good choice Carl.  The steel in that tank is likely made in Hamilton on one of our 5 Galvanizing lines. So, in a small way, your purchase helps keep me in a job.

I did a new Spectra tank as well. Although my original tank looked to be in pretty good shape, I would have cost me $300 to have it cleaned out and lined. The new tank was $400.

It fit perfect with just a little pull up on the filler neck.

Hey Carl how much was it and where can I order one too?  The old one I have gave me nothing but trouble on the trip with rust plugging my fuel filter a couple of times, as you know. You can PM me if you don't want to let everybody know how much it was.

Spectra makes great rads and heater cores also! I have one of their heater cores ('64 Impala) ... excellent!

Just installed this new tank and sending unit. It seems to fit great. As long as it's sealed up, I'd say I'm 100% happy with it.

I tested the sending unit out before I installed it in the tank and it seems to work perfect also. I still marvel at what a Mickey Mouse setup that fuel tank lock ring/cam is. It always seems so goofy how those things install...

Priced a tank for the 63 and it was cheaper in Minnesota ($169) by about a
hundred bucks then here at Car Quest.
Heck, made in Montreal, couldn't they just drop it off on the way to the states.......

Just wanted to look this up biggrin  and I bumped it up

I dropped the tank out of my 66 "project car" I purchased from Carl 1  biggrin

The tank was dented, and probably jacked up by the looks of the bottom... biggrin

The straps are like new... and the tank was completely coated by some black "stuff"  sorta like a reliner, only on the outside...

The trunk floor is like new...  except for a couple of spots "over" the rear body mount panels (that need to be changed)

So I will order a  GM 37K tomorrow

Young fellow at Car Quest insisted I needed a 37C  but I knew Carl had posted a picture

wondering about painting it

now I know to clear coat it

The sending unit looks new  and I got 10 gallons of stale Sask. gas from last year to burn up in my mini van tomnorrow

Actually stale Manitoba gas. The day I got the car, I put a bunch of fuel in it, I am thinking it was about 50 bucks, drove it home, parked it in the shed and there it sat. I had planned to burn that gas off with it real quick but plans sometimes change.

He is trying to sell you an Impala tank. It appears to be identical, except the filler neck is wrong for a Pontiac bumper.

I looked at that one when I was ordering mine, but you notice the finish? I don't think that's a Spectra. I bet it's an offshore tank. I knew I wanted a Spectra and nothing other.

Your van will be a lot faster with big block fuel in it.

I bought one for a 66 Impala through my local NAPA for a bit more than you guys paid.  It fit right in and made a big difference to the car; no more rusty gas!

Great product!

At the time, the Spectra was probably on of the best things I did on my 67, rather than mess around trying to fix a 43 year old tank. When the E fuels came along, I think it just broke all the crud loose and created havoc.

To me, fuel tanks are underpriced. I think companies could get more money for them, considering how easy they are to swap and how much grief a guy can save himself by changing the tank. It's a no brainer to replace a fuel tank on a vehicle that has been sitting for quite a while with stinky old gas in it. I don't see how a guy could ever get it perfectly cleaned out, and to spend the money to do it? Why, when you likely spend at least 1/2 the cost of a new tank cleaning it, AND you can buy a Canadian made product.

My two cents...

Funny you mention that Carl. I had mine cleaned and sending unit repaired. Since then I've replaced the sending unit and I keep gettin this rusty looking crap coming up into my filter. Think it's time for a tank replacement, guess I didn't save myself any money.....will make it my winter project!

I likely listen to more advice than I should sometimes but so many people told me not to waste my time with old fuel tanks that I thought it must be true, and what you say confirms that once again.

Great news    I can buy one for Uncle Bernie for all the things he does for me at n/c   lol

Carl you said you just clear coated the tank   does it need any special prep for that?
