GM Cruise Control Kit (Universal)

This will be another one of my long winded explanations....

This is basically a universal cruise control kit. It's from a mid 70's Impala. It's very basic, no resume, nothing fancy like that. However, it's very easy to install on pretty much any vehicle, especially 60's cars. I had it in my 65 Acadian for years when it was a 427.

Installation amounts to this-

1) Hook up the open ended vacuum hose to an engine vacuum source.

2) Hook up the pink wire to 12 volts that is fused, easy to find in the fuse box.

3) Hook up the lower speedo cable to the trans,, upper cable to the speedo head.

4) Install the two switches on the brake pedal to turn off the vacuum and power when the brake is applied.

5) Replace the stock signal lever with this lever.

6) Mount the vacuum unit under the hood and install the stud/cable at the carburetor.

This unit served me well for years, up until the car was parked about 1996 for an extended period. I drove the car only a couple of times after that before I pulled the engine. If I remember correctly, before I pulled the engine, the cruise was working but surged, normally a symptom of a bad transducer (the box with the speedo cables and wires running to it). That is why there is a new in the box rebuilt transducer included with the kit.

The other weak link in these kits was the cruise lever on vehicles with tilt steering. The wires eventually fatigued from the tilt being moved up and down. I purposely pulled a lever from an Impala with NO tilt when I bought these parts! (Yes, I know, just a bit anal....) My Acadian never had tilt either, so I would expect the wires in this lever to be good for a while yet.

I looked online to get an idea what the rebuilt transducer is worth. The cheapest I could find was $82 on ebay. I am looking to get $110 shipped anywhere in Canada for this complete setup.

Really nice unit at an extremely fair price. I wish i needed it but i have DANA universal cruise units on both my 57 Pontiac and 74 Chev. I even have a complete extra unit in case the others fail. This is one sweet invention i would never live without. My last few regular everyday cars had and have cruise (factory) as well and some of my past company vans. I would give up AC before i ever gave up my cruise control units. I guess i am a bit of a control freak. Good luck with the sale Carl. Cheers. George.

I plan to take it with me to Guru's place next trip to Winnipeg but it sounds like he will be taking it. I will try to let you know if that doesn't work out. Fair enough?

Carl I saw a brand new one of these kits on ebay a few months ago. Went for 475 or something like that. I used to sell a lot of those kits ( GM accessory pkgs) which you probably did too and installed many for guys too. Anything from my 72 Cheyenne to my buddys Model A street rod... Too bad the transducers are unreliable but maybe a good lube on the cables would give them more life. ??

We had good luck with these rebuilt transducers. Whatever the guy was doing to them seemed to solve the GM flaws. Yes, you can pretty much put this kit on any make and model you like.

I forgot you had been a fellow part guy before you hit the big time!
