60 Pontiac 261 ci rebuild

Looking for a source to purchase new hydraulic lifters and cam for 60 Pontiac 261 cubic inch.  American sources only have solid lifters and cam that was used in US Chevy trucks.  I have heard that hydraulic lifters for the 235 will fit the 261 but this still leaves the problem of the cam.  Already been in touch with NAPA and Piston Ring with negative results.  Any leads will be greatly appreciated.  Also would like to hear comments regarding using 235 hydraulic lifters in the 261.  Thanks

If you log onto Egge Machine website I believe they can supply hydraulic valve lifters for the 261. Nor sure about camshafts! Bob.

Tool nut this article here will not be of much good to you. You have a Canadian built 261 for the Pontiac cars, not the American built Chevrolet truck motor. There are a number of differences. So please keep this in mind when reading that article. Cheers. George.

Parts are not easy to come by when I did mine two years ago we have parts coming from all over the place. To get a set of rings we had to use three different suppliers.

Finding hydraulic cams and lifters for the 261 is impossible from regular suppliers. You will have to buy N.O.S. (new original stock) or excellent used from the net. The only items made new for the 261 are the mechanical lifters and mechanical cams, that were and are made for the American Chevrolet truck 261 engines.  You could always rebuild your own hydraulic lifters, assuming the tappet surfaces are not pitted or galled. You can also have your own  camshaft reground if your lobes are flat but that gets expensive. I hate to sound negative but you may have to settle for good used. I will PM you the name and number of a guy i know in Toronto, that usually has parts for the Canadian 261 motors. Give him a try. Good luck with your search. Like you, i love the 261 inline six motor. Here is a pic of mine in my 57 Pontiac. Cheers. George.
