Perhaps the marketing folks at Pontiac might have named this car something different, Ventura GT or something similar. BUT it is a GTO and personally I thought the car was rather cool when it came out in '74, I had a large poster of the red brochure car on my bedroom wall and made a book cover out of the brochure if you can believe that.
A bit of Trivia, the 1974 GTO did well for Pontiac, it outsold the 1973 Lemans based GTO, so this is not the rarest year, that distinction belongs to 1973 with just over 4,800 units being sold. 231 in Canada.
There were plans for a 1975 version however at that time Corporate decision makers decided the car was to have been equipped with a Buick 350 engine. This was too much for Pontiac Marketers to consider so the idea of a 75 GTO was scrapped.
The 74 GTO is basically the Formula X Ventura concept car from the early 70's. The photo shows this concept car along with a 1973 Formula X LeMans which most will equate to the 1977 Can Am production car.
The idea of putting 66 Grand Prix style driving/parking lights in the grille was toyed with for Lemans as well, I don't have a photo like this for the Formula X Ventura but we know they made it to production on the 74 GTO.

Fascinating pictures Ray! There was a will at Pontiac back then but the Corporate Brass had other pressing things to get done, like bumpers, emissions, seat belts, warning lights & buzzers.
The 74 GTO is thought to be blasphemous by many but they performed and handled well for their time. A 400 Pontiac swap is a cinch on them. At least they didnt devalue the name the same way Ford did with the Cobra moniker on a sticker car with louvers all over the place and power starting at a 2.3 OHC four. I choose to forget about the Sunbird GTO since you can peel those 3 dealer-installed letters off and nobody will call you a poser.
