July 2014 Feature Car

Kevin Nielson is the proud owner of this sharp 1966 Beaumont Sport Deluxe. Although originally powered by a 283 and a powerglide, this SD has something a little more exciting under the hood! The wheels really give this Beaumont a period look. I have to admit that the more I look at Kevin's 66, the more I want one! Kevin tells us more about this great car:

Here is my 1966 Pontiac Beaumont Sport Deluxe. She is an original SD car (73617) that came from the factory in Aztec Bronze with Bronze interior. Original equipment included a 283 V8, powerglide transmission, heavy duty front and rear suspension, deluxe seatbelts, and the rear auxiliary speaker. The original owner took possession at Reid Motors of Kamloops, BC.

I have admired the body style of the 66-67 Beaumont and Chevelle for years, but not until recently did I have the means to acquire a hobby car. The appeal to own a “Canadian Only” classic was an important reason for the purchase of the Beaumont. My friend’s father came upon the car on Craig’s list and forwarded the info on to me (which also later showed up on Canadian Poncho). I made arrangements to view the car in Abbotsford, BC on a return trip from Vancouver Island where I had just picked up a clean 1994 GMC pickup for my son. Turned out to be an expensive trip as you can see!

The previous owner completed a frame-off restoration performing the majority of the body and paint work himself finishing the car in Madeira Maroon. The original powertrain was long gone. He installed a freshened gen VI 454 topped off with an Edelbrock Performer intake and a Holley 750.

A Keisler TKO-500 5 speed now sits behind the big block. The exhaust exits through a set of hooker headers and a pair of Flowmaster 30 series mufflers. The rear-end is a GM 10 bolt housing 3:08 gears. She sits on BFG Radial TA’s 215/65/15 in front and 255/60/15 out back on Vision Wheel 15x7 and 15x8 rims. Stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. The interior is all new with black buckets, door panels, headliner, and carpet.

Since getting her home I have completed a bunch of work on the electrical end of things including the reverse lights, license plate lights, headlights, horn, wiper-washer pump, and tail lights. I also installed a bunch of missing trim pieces such as the V8 emblems (Dale’s Muscle Car Parts), inner door panel emblems, and the belt-line trim. I swapped out the Grant wood wheel for a correct deluxe steering wheel. Also, replaced a cracked headlight bezel with a much better one from Tin Man. Upgrades completed recently include an MSD Streetfire distributor, MSD 8.5mm plug wires, and a cam swap (Comp Cam XE-268…she ate a lobe unfortunately).

Future plans include getting the correct rocker trim from DT Stainless (belt-line trim purchased was flawless), a set of 295/55/15’s on the rear, 2” drop spindle, and a set of correct “deluxe” black seat belts (anybody seen any lately??).

Special thanks has to go to my wife for helping my dreams become a reality and being so understanding in the past few months while I spent more hours with the Beaumont than doing the rest of the “honey-do” list. Also, thanks to all of the Canadian Poncho members who have answered my questions and provided parts to getting this girl to where she sits today.

Congratulations!

Gorgeous car....love the big block, 3 pedals and the 5 speed.

With the 3.08's and the Tremec O/D your final drive will be in the 2.10:1 region...great for long distance cruising on this Canada Day.

Enjoy...

Great looking car! congrats

Did you mean a Tremec TKO 500?  Do you know if the trans tunnel had to be modified to fit?

You will require some tunnel surgery for this trans, meaning that you will have to "lift" the tunnel.  Heres a couple of solutions (click here).   Yes, you WILL have to modify your tunnel in a similar manner to get it installed (regardless of what someone else tells you).  The tunnel on your car is simply to small to accomodate this large trans.  And do not lower the tailshaft to get the trans to fit.  Heres why (click here).

The kit (including the tunnel) came from Keisler engineering in the US. It is a Tremec TKO-500. I have seen some info on line that they have gone through a bankruptcy and have been acquired by Silver Sport Transmissions.

Happy Canada Day!!

Kevin
