Now that' I've solved my wobbly driveshaft issue, I'm looking to swap out my rear end with a replacement unit. I've got a refurbished 3.08 POSI in a spare housing complete with axles ready to bolt in and go. I will be re-using the drum brake assembly. Any idea how long it will take doing it driveway style using jacks and stands? Any top tips of the trade?
start with a good slide hammer, and if you can get the adapter that bolts to the axle flange.. otherwise .. I 've used a piece of chain bolted through the lugs... sometimes the axles a bear to pull, to little O rings on the outer bearing race hold real good ! haha...
once their out of the way,, unbolt the backing plates and hang them in the wheel well with bungees out of the way , careful of the brake lines.
A good floor jack with a 1' 1' pad to support the carrier, it will take a little prying and to wiggle it off the studs. the little copper washers.. you want to make sure you re use them , otherwise the gear lube will weep through the studs.
re installing .. I used to lay on my back and bench press and in... maybe not anymore !
make sure to put a little white grease on the outer O-rings.. if you cut on installing,,,,the lube will contimenate the brakes.. it will come through !
give your self 3 hours - 4 hours .. it's not a bad job.
