700R4 for an Americian pontiac engine

What year car or truck do I look for to find a 700R4 with the correct bolt pattern for a 428 Pontiac engine. I am still thinking about doing this conversion for my 55 stationwagon and using an overdrive transmission to try and get some decent fuel mileage. I remember reading somewhere that some 700R4 have a dual bolt pattern. Iwould be interested in just finding a casing with the  correct bolt pattern as I have a couple of 700R4 transmissions on the shelf and could just swap the internals while doing a rebuild.

Thanks Al

To the best of my knowledge there are no BOP pattern 700R4's. You would need to incorporate an adapter plate or use a 200R4.

There are some "dual" patterns used in Buick regal {I think] A friend of mine just put a 200R in his 62 G/P 389 & used a dual pattern one in the 200 series. You can beef up a 200 to hold some HP He had to use a plate made up for starter mtr. as his org. bolted to bell hsg. swaped out the flex plate too as his was like a std. clutch one with the old "ROTO' hydro + new d/shaft Pete

I put one in my 80 TA seven years ago. It came from a 86 Buick Regal and bolted in place of the turbo 350,but had to modify the cross member. It is only a 301 so the power level is no problem. A friend had modified one behind a 455 running in the 12s in the 1/4. A heavy duty version is in the Grand National, SS Monty and 442. Barry

Thanks for the suggestions. I wonder if a 86 Grand Prix Aero Coupe would have a heavy duty 200 series like a Monte Carlo SS.  I will also check out the Trans Dapt adapter. A 200 would make the swap easier as it would be same same length as the turbo 400 that is on the engine now. I want to use the car as a highway cruiser when completed.

The 200 would be shorter than your 400 and uses a 350 style yoke. Same length as the 350. Also has a lock up torque converter. If you remove the transmittion from a doaner car take the wiring and vacuum switch for the converter. Barry

Most all of the Buick & Olds wagons have the 200R4 trans in them, unless they have the chevy engine in them. Also the guy who said the Grand Nat's have the better trans is correct, but theere kinda hard to find. The best bet is to just get a 200R4 & rebuild it with all the good parts that way it will stay together. It's not usually the HP that kills the trans it's the torque. A typical 455 will hurt a 200R4 because of the torque they make. You can get the sprages that have the extra gears & there built heavier. Also you can install the keviler clutchs & the better steels. All th parts will come in a kit from Monster Trans. They have several levels of build kit that will help keep the 200R4 alaive up to & over 650 HP. But just about any Pontiac engine has to much torque for a std. 200R4 trans. It will live for awhile but won't last if you beat on it in it's std. set up.
