A51 Sports Option on 66 B body

There's an interesting (at least to me) discussion on a Chevy forum right now. A Manitoba member there claims to have purchased a 66 Impala convert with A51 on the cowl tag. He feels it is not an SS but it has buckets and console on a regular Impala. I am telling him that as far as I know, all Canadian Chevrolet Impalas and Pontiac Parisiennes in 66 with A51 tags were SS's and Custom Sports respectively. I don't believe you could get buckets in a regular Parisienne or Impala in 66.

Tell me if my thinking and your observations are the same.

The one exception being, I know that Grande Parisiennes and I suppose Caprices may have had A51 on the tag for bucket seats.

And I should add, my 66 GP doesn't even have it on the cowl tag!

If it was sold in Canada couldn't he simply contact GM Vintage Vehicle Services to find out for sure?

Yes, and I suggested that to him. The only problem is, we know that there are at least a few Beaumont A51 cars that have been documented wrong by GM over the years.

...I agree, A51 had the buckets option. I have four '66 Custom Sports here and they all have A51 on the tag, 2 straight Parisienne's and no A51, and my 66 GP 4 door has no A51 either. The guy just has to look at his floor board if the seat mounts have been modded by someone, or the console hump has been reworked . I bet his floor is correct for the SS option.

Probably not earth shattering but my Oshawa built 67 Malibu came with the A51 option and it is not an SS.

That makes sense, but only on the Beaumonts and Chevelles, not on B bodies. When I was a kid pumping gas there was a local guy who came in often with a 67 283 Malibu bucket seat car. In later years, my nephew in Alberta had one too.

That all makes sense. I would like to see the floor in this car too.

In 1965 there was a Parisienne Custom Sport series, in 1967 there was a 2+2 series. 1966 was odd in Canada, the Custom Sport was the A51 Sports Option applied to the Parisienne series. Since Chevrolet & Pontiac in Canada were in lock-step with each other model for model, it would follow that in 1966 the Super Sport was an option on the Impala series in Canada(though I don't know that for a fact). Interesting. I suppose it is worth referencing a Canadian 1966 Chevrolet shop manual to verify all the series available.

BTW in 1968, Super Sport was an option on the Impala series as RPO Z03 in both Canada & the U.S. It consisted of buckets, console and special upholstery pattern different from the Impala, plus P01 wheel covers and Super Sport tags in the grille, trunk lid and below the Impala nameplates on each front fender.

1966 & 67 the Impala & Impala SS shared the same upholstery pattern on the seats and door panels for their respective years. The 1966 models are especially easy to clone since they Impal & SS shared the same exterior moldings; just the Super Sport emblems were unique, plus the plentiful SS wheelcovers.
