It is all the "Green" inviro nonsense that has driven the prices to the moon. Here in Ontario the green police are everywhere and because of that many shops have been put out of business. In the fall of 1996 i went to Cambridge Chrome in Cambridge, Ontario and they did everything on my 57 Pontiac and i do mean everything. It cost me just over $5,000 back then. I could not afford to have it done today. The work they did then was perfect in every way and it still shows all these years later. Much of the chrome on a lot of today's repro stuff is pure garbage. Off shore crap and what you save now will cost you later. Cheers. George.
I'm not certain, but I suspect a lot of people would rather have a cleaner environment, and less cheap shine on the cars. I kind of like to think we're almost beyond the days when all the chemicals were poured down to drain to poison the fish.
Although, I'm not sure that shipping the pollutants to dwell in a cave in Alberta is really the answer.
Just one man's opinion.
I had a feeling i was going to rub some one the wrong way and some one would misunderstand me and here it is. Of course we would rather live in a healthy planet than have shinny chrome.............. the reality is that they have gone too far, way too far. Who said anything about pouring anything down the drain. Stop being so dramatic and i do not understand your comment on Alberta. George.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents worth in. Last week I picked up my front and rear bumpers for my 62 Parisienne from Cambridge Chrome. I was quoted $2400 to do both but got a bit of a better deal in the end. Another chrome shop in London had quoted me $1000 each but I was told they can't plate the bumpers with copper as their tanks will only hold smaller bumpers like Mustangs or Camaros. He said they use nickel twice instead of the copper, nickel, chromium. I felt much better with the Cambridge process and while I don't expect my finished 62 to be a show car, the bumpers came out absolutely flawless. They joked with me that chroming the front bumper was like chroming a canoe. There had been minor obvious dents etc in the bumpers but there is no trace of them now. I am the first to criticize when I get poor or mediocre work, but I have to say that Cambridge Chrome did a hell of a good job on them.
Chroming a bumper is all about the prep..its heavy bodywork to get them straight and dent free, and most today just forget the copper strike which is costly but fills the imperfections..some of the older rechromes were just as bad as todays, had my 72 lemans replated in 89 and when the protective coating was washed off it rusted right away...i have heard good things about some western chrome shops being affordable ..my advice would be to check pontiac forums, there are good and bad repro's..some of the good are worth getting..if you can find out who carries it..i do have a decent driver bumper however for $175 plus shipping..email me at thundapipes1@aol.com..be well.
Just need to find out who does Cambridge chrome work in the states and tk it there myself,
probably be 4-500 cheaper?

I actually got it rechromed a number of years ago from a seller on ebay for $269 and was just wondering what Cambridge Chrome would charge. Its still wrapped up, waiting to be installed.
Hi,just dropped off two bumpers, front and back from 68 Beaumont. The guy said $450 for front and $500 for rear. They are in rough shape with some dings an a couple tears etc.He was refered to me by another chrome shop in Saginaw. Its a one man show that does ,hot rods, show cars, etc. The head light bezels $120 each, door handles $80 each, rear tail piece $140,etc.I am going there tonight to drop off my valve covers and breather lid.The place is Tri-city Chrome Plating 4051 East Street Saginaw Michigan, tel 989-777-0770.I will le you know when I get them back.

new US made (Trim Parts) GM approved exterior door handles $112.40 /set. Includes handles, push buttons, springs, etc and even the gaskets. These are very nice; better than new old stock !
Jim's polishing and buffing in Scarborough Ontario does great quality work. They brought a very rare rear bumper back to life for me and their chroming is the 3 step process including the initial copper layer. Disposal of the toxic sludge left over from the chroming process is definitely what has driven the prices through the roof for chroming. I wonder what they do with the same sludge overseas that is leftover from doing the $200 bumpers? Hmmmmm.
Here's a pic of my rear...My rear bumper is not being reproduced by anyone as it has 7 holes in it including one slotted hole for the 71 only and SS only horizontal rubber strip :)
