I don't know who he is, but he must be some kind of famous clutch artist.

I've watched this about 100 times...its the sound of the shift that keeps me coming back.

Is this how it might have sounded in a Super Stock car 61- 64?

I tried the 61 speed shift once on my cousins 74 Camaro with a LT1, BOOM!

Blew the upper rad hose. Steam everywhere. Thought I blew the motor. Still razzes me about it.

My former next door neighbor, had a brand new 1963 Impala S/S...327-300HP broke in at Sparta, ON. track, hard 1/4 miles...all power shifting.
- he tells me, was the fastest small block in St. Thomas, back in the day
GM dealer replaced a few rear ends, clutches and a transmission, etc...at 9,000 miles, dealer said: "your new car warranty period is now expired"...LOL.
With a mint body and beat drive train, he ordered a new 1964 S/S and sold the '63 low miler...next owner soon figured, 9K original miles were all hard ones.
- now my friend is 75 y/o, and has owned a mint 1964 Impala, 350-V8, automatic, TN car...for the last several years / loves driving it every summer
He sure has some good old car stories, to share...the video reminded me of him driving.

That's Charlie McCarthy, he's a regular competitor at the pure stock drags.

I've only ever seen videos but the car runs very well.

Here's a video of him racing a 428 Cobra Jet Mustang...

I used to powershift my 56 Chevy 327 at 6500 rpm, it had 5.57 rear gears and I could get rubber in all 4 gears.  I missed hitting 3rd gear one time and the revs popped up to about 8000 and the generator pooched.   Had a good shift into 2nd one time and it broke one of the bearing caps in the differential.   It takes a little courage to keep the gas pedal to the floor when shifting, but the feeling of the car leaping ahead each shift was really cool.

You need to ask Santa for a GoPro Carl. It's not too late. Think of recording a good test on those roads out there in the spring!

Wow, that thing looks pretty cool but you may have to settle for some cheap video shots when the day finally comes to bang some gears on this one!

Great 409 videos Jim. My 64cs did 13.23 on 800 14 whitewalls in 1964. Stock shifter was ok but power shifts where calculated buy body motion. My present cars get the odd power shift when I'm on the right road with no one around. Maybe a GoPro video can be done this summer on the 64cs.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I knew there'd be a few times I'd get seller's remorse, and this would be one of them. Nice picture Carl. Where's the video of you hammering that shifter????

13.23 is a great time,,, especially on street tires.

It sounds like you had that car dialed in!

That video makes me smile because it shows me there's hope for this gray haired guy to be doing that for a few years yet!

Used to power shift my OL 55 Chevy, 6 to 8 grand shifts but the "odd" time the clutch would stay on the floor 11" Diaphragm & centrifugal force would take over, Broken rocker arms were common,& kept a bag of them in back seat till I threaded & cross pinned the studs, & changed to a 3 finger Borg & Beck clutch unit.

The 55 Chevy goes pretty straight as long as I don't let too much air out of the back tires.

On this run I'm dialed in at 10.21 and it's a pretty typical run. By the way this car has 180 degree headers so it sounds a bit different.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4MAKcBvpXQ

I only have one video of the Pontiac on it's first day out with the new engine. It still had 3.73 gears at that point so it was very slow off the line with the Powerglide.

If the link works, it's running 9.54 @ 144.5 which is fairly quick, but it looks and feels like a bus going down the track. (we certainly didn't need the wheelie bars)

With the 4.30 gears we're running now it's much quicker off the line and more fun to drive. It's running 9.20's now and pulling a nice long, low wheelie off the line.

We're sure there's at least another tenth or two once we get it dialed in.

We'd love to hit an 8.99,,, I'm not sure we can do that but it might be possible if we get good traction, and a tailwind, on a cool day. LOL
