1989 Sunbird GT Turbo. Cornerbrook NL

I remember a co worker buying one of these new in 1989. We worked at a Chevy dealer however we somehow managed to get one for him. It was a bit of a sleeper (in 1989 terms) Torque steer was horrendous!

Can't be many left in this shape. It'd be a cool daily driver.

I think most were automatics too, making this one even rarer. And rust free, that is certainly rare on those cars.

According to an internet search this car is, 0-60- 7.7 sec and 1/4 mile 15.8. Thats better than a 74 GTO and about the same as a 64 GTO.

Cool little car! Clean!

I wish he would have posted a interior shot (not only of the gauges).

Cut my eye teeth, as the saying goes, on these cars.... They were new when I started my near 20 year run with GM starting in Goose-Bay, Labrador in '88... I loved the turbos... But, they were griefy.... Worse was the valve cover gaskets on both the turbo and non turbo versions... Head gaskets and the odd camshaft and followers... and the timing belt at the usual 50,000kms. The turbo didn't give issues due to the fact we were near rust free on everything.... Exhaust repairs were a dream to work on there.... Smoke wrench was very seldom needed.

My Dad bought the youngest daughter an '88 automatic... Since they were in Newfoundland, I had to safty it... Went to drive it across the road from the used car lot, it shut off.... Belt went right there and then... Thank goodness these were a spin free engine. Dad bought himself a '90 manual version.... It went like stink and when I would go home for vacation, I would drive and my Dad would sit in the passenger seat with his arms crossed, usually enjoying a higher rate of speed ride... We would often "hunt" on the TCH for participating drivers.. One instance that Dad always remembered was a guy that we were playing with, going up a hill towards St. John's, the guy side by side shrugged, as in, that's all I have... my Dad smiled, waved and we were gone.... (lololol)

There was a beauty '88-'89 rag that didn't sell there and it was shipped out of Goose-Bay, possibly transferred....

In '91 they went to the corporate 3.1 "T" engine... We had a sweet yellow 3.1 manual SE that wasn't selling.... Wanted Dad to buy that one but he was never interested in new ones.... (hahaha)

I bought a '91 while in Rosetown, Sk in '05.... Engine knock... So I too the bottom end out of a 3100 "M" engine and swapped it... Lots of fun with that one too.... Loaded, sunroof, a/c, locks, windows, cruise, tilt.... It would never quit, as in limit out.... The speedo would take 5-6 seconds sometimes before it would come off the 160 pin.... I sold it when I bought my 10th anniversary Firehawk.... I always keep my eyes open... You never know... There may be another..

(LOL) Not often you hear that..... I never had my iPhone or a GPS when I owned this car... It would have been interesting to see what it was doing...

'91 Sunbird Speedo.JPG

The Sunbird always outperformed it's counterpart Cavalier for get up and go... I had the yellow SE and my Cliff, another tech, had a Z24 and we went for a "drive" to see the difference... The 'Bird, in our eyes, performed better... Used the scanner to monitor the ABS wheel speed sensors to see how fast we were going.... (speedo topped out at 160)

Hey 67Poncho, that 91 you bought in Rosetown, you didn't happen to buy it off of a younger guy named Colin did you?

How fast did the scanner say you were going? It's ironic I saw this ad. Just the other day I was behind a MINT 89ish Sunbird (non turbo but it was a 2 door) in Charlottetown. I couldn't believe how mint it was. Even the taillight lenses looked like new (no fogging). A strange site to see a car that old so clean in PEI - in December!

67Poncho I graduated from Rosetown High, my buddy Colin had a 91 Sunbird just like that that we used to cruise around in all the time. He sold it sometime in that timeframe, I had already gone off to Uni by then so I never did find out who he sold it to or where it ended up.
