HMCS YUKON (263)

HMCS YUKON

The History of the YUKON

Built by Burrard's, Vancouver, Yukon was commissioned on 25 May 1963 and, manned by east-coast personnel, sailed for Halifax on 27 July. On 5 January 1965, she departed for Esquimalt. In mid-1970, with Mackenzie and Provider, she carried out exercises with units of the Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and U.S. navies, incidentally making visits to Kobe, Osaka and Sasebo. On completion of her mid-life refit in 1975, Yukon became a member of Training Group Pacific. Her DELEX refit was carried out by Burrard Yarrow at Esquimalt, between 28 May 1984 and 16 January 1985. During her career, Yukon steamed more than 792,000 nautical miles and visited some 30 foreign ports. She was paid off on 3 December 1993 and eventually sold to the San Diego Oceans Foundation. On 25 April 1999 she left Vancouver in tow for San Diego, where she was to be ceremoniously sunk on July 15 as a sport-divers' wreck, but she flooded in rough weather at the intended site and sank the day before.

Of course I entirely missed "NOVA", did you ever sail on her Steve?

I put her on a separate thread.

Here's a shot of Athabaskan from earlier this evening from Port of New York web cam, she's steaming down the Hudson. I like the look of these old Tribal Class destroyers, only three still in service now, Iroquois 280 ,Algonquin 283 and Athabaskan 282. Huron 281 was taken out of service.

Ray, I'm also partial to the DDH class of ship's. I was a "280 lady" most of my career as a mechanic in the NAVY.

The Huron suffered a terrible fate... she's now a diving reef. The brass picked the wrong destroyer to sink, as Huron was in way better shape than Algonquin/283 (add those numbers together and it equals =13)

I was onboard Algonquin in 2007 and witnessed "Operation Sink-Ex" The plan was to conduct target practise on Huron, with help from other HMCS ships, airforce and a US Navy submarine would then finish her off with a death blow from a Mark-48 torpedo.

The master plan didn't unfold anything like the brass planned... Algonquin (sister ship to the Huron) was told to fire at the upper superstructure to avoid hitting her below the water line. Well... the Algonquin and Winnipeg open fire, and the Algonquin proceedes to shoot Huron numerous times below the water line right in her arse!!!

The Huron was gutted hulk, and had all of it's watertight hatches wide open. After the guns finished firing, a CF-18 strafed the deck with one pass as the boat dangerously listed to the starboard side. The bow then headed straight for the sky and she sank like a ton of bricks very quickly! no

I remember smoking a cigar and enjoying a few beers and laughter on deck afterwards! I thought the NAVY permanently sidelined Athabaskan due to major structural rust issues within it's keel... glad to see that "muscle boat" is still sailing after 40+ years of service.

Thanks for those stories Kyle, always very interesting to hear from someone "who was there". While I never served my Dad did his time during WWII on Corvettes and Minesweepers so I have an inherited interest in the RCN. I'd have to dig through the family photo albums but Dad has several good shots of ships he trained on and I too have a good number taken of the 280's, Restigouche and Oberon Subs taken in Halifax Harbour.

I have no doubt your father told sum hilarious and interesting stories about his time served in the service. My job tittle was "Marine Engineer" but the WWII nickname for an engineer was "Stoker" (engineer's are like the Kelly's Hero's gang onboard any warship).

Good times... I have a tattoo of a ship's anchor on my right hand to always remind me of my salty pals.

Would you believe it ! ...my dad was Stoker 1st Class, his rank insignia was a red propeller with a star over it. That's a coincidence if ever there was one. You always wish you'd had more time to hear the stories when he's gone but he told me a few.
