Time to unvail the Gasser Car Hauler

I can't wait any longer, shortly after buying my Vintage Gasser last year I thought I should have a Vintage Truck to Haul the car to the track.  This is not a Canadian Pontiac but I know there are many members in Canada with an appreciation for farm trucks.  I rescued this truck from a farm in Arkansas where it had been since new.  As expected from a farm truck it only made the occasion trip to town for supplies while it's main duty was to haul hay to or from the fields, tools and supplies.

This 1963 Dodge D-500 has had the stake bed removed and replaced with a car hauler bed.  I have hopes the original 318ci V-8 with 4 spd and a 2 speed rear axle will get my car to our local track some 40-50 miles of country roads and occasionally it will be on the highway with a cruising speed of 55 mph and much patience for trips up to 100 miles.  I have purchased an 18k lbs winch in order to pull most anything up on the bed.  I also have extra underbed tool boxes to mount and a couple of fuel tanks for reg gas and racing fuel.  Of course a CB radio will be a must in order to keep in touch with the guys on the road.  If I thought the running gear would handle it I could pick up a 383 or 440 from an old motor home for the grades.

Cool truck Norm!

My one and only Dodge ever that I owned was a 67 short box 4X4 with a 4 speed. The body style was very very similar to that. If your truck has the same 4 speed as mine did, it will be fine with a 440 because the 4 speed that was in mine was identical to the Chevy C60 grain trucks with a 4 speed that we service at the dealership. Way too much trans for that little truck. It's a New Process, I just forget the model number. Might be a model 465?confuse

Looks good there Norm. There should be lots of life left in that truck no matter what you put in there for power train. I like the way the deck can be lifted if you want to go up an 1 1/2"

I will definitely be making adjustments to the bed.  The winch and auxiliary tanks (Beer half barrels, 15.5 gals) will be mounted directly behind the cab.  I may also enable side ramps in order to carry a pit vehicle sideways at the front of the bed.  I will be adding a platform hitch to the rear that will serve as a step up to climb up on the bed.  My main concern is the angle of the bed at the top of the dovetail.  The Gasser is tall but most any other cars I might haul are low to the ground.

love it ......almost the same set up as my 63 F%#d hauler......sometimes I have trouble with some cars...if I have to raise the

back of the car I use 2x8 planks on my ramps.....it's nice working with a winch....I love the 2sp axle .....that poly-motor might

have enough grunt to do the job

Now that is a beautiful hauler.  What is the power plant?   Loading that truck would be all about the length of the ramps.

it has the original 391 ci. FT........I have had it up to 70mph.....runs the best in a draft behind a 18 wheeler at 55-60 mph

you really don't have to get too close (about 8-10 car lengths) .....ramps are about 12 ft..(in my pic. you can see them

under my car)....it has a 3 ft. dove-tail

I agree, that "something" for me is simplicity and brute strength.  I love the fact that you step on the gas, shift the gears and it goes.  It is all about gears, from the motor to the trans to the 2 speed rear.  With proper lubrication the gears will mesh and the truck will move.  The same goes for the winch I have to install, feed it 24v and the motor will turn the drum and the wire rope will pull with brute strength.  During the 10 yrs or so I was transporting I was happy happy happy when my diesel dually was rolling down the road at 70mph, slightly over 2200 rpms with 15000 lbs rolling behind and I loved the grades as that was the true test and my rig would shine.  I kept tweaking my equipment until it did the job with ease.  This is what I now envision for the Dodge D-500, I will tweak this truck and the related equipment until it is an overkill for the job I need it to do.   I plan to enjoy owning this truck as much as the race car it will haul.   To enjoy your hauler, you need, torque, gearing, adequate fuel and proper equipment for the unexpected issues.   I can hardly wait.

hey norm. i'm in the process of upgrading the tranny in my truck and what i'm using is a nv4500. it's a farmer five speed that replaced the old 4 sp and is used in dodges and gm's. could be an option for you old girl. that being said i think its more then strong enough for your package. mine came out of a 93 gm 3500 hd.

Both of the trucks in this thread look great.
These are the kind of trucks that make people smile.
