Torque Drive?

I noticed on the '69 Acadian brochure that Carl S. has advertised elsewhere on the site, they refer to a third shift pattern that appears to be 2-speed, labelled as "Torque Drive".  How is that different than the regular old Powerglide?

You had to manually shift from 1st to Hi or vice versa as it had no valve body or solenoids. aka shiftless automatic smile

Yup,  was basicly a powerglide with 1/2 the parts removed.  it would downshift, but you had to manually upshift.  I have an original GM JamHandy filmstrip from 1969 that explains the whole thing in incredible detail as well as a small salesmans handbook.

I had a couple many years ago and don't remember that Torque Drive would down shift:

In 1969 it was advertised "with clutchless 2-speed manual shifting"

I also had a 1969 Maverick with a clutchles 3 speed manual shifting automatic.

Thanks
Randy

I would suspect they'd be really reliable with less parts?

You are probably right,  i would have to watch the filmstrip and play the matching record again

There was one in a 71 or 72 6 cylinder Nova that a buddy had a few years ago.   It's basically a Powerglide with some parts missing.  It probably cost GM more to make these manual shift Powerglides than to just make a Powerglide.

Thanks guys, I don't think I've ever seen one before, or if I did I didn't notice it.  Definitely haven't owned one.

Wonder how many were sold, and even moreso how many are still around that weren't swapped out at some point?

The Torque Drive was introduced mid-year 1968.  It came on the following cars:

1968 six cylinder Camaro

1968 six cylinder Nova & Acadian (+ 4 cyl US Nova)

1969 six cylinder Camaro

1969 six cylinder Nova & Acadian (+ 4 cyl US Nova)

1970 six cylinder Nova & Acadian (+ 4 cyl US Nova)

1971 six cylinder Nova & Acadian

1971 Vega

All the above were column-shift only except the Vega.
