I noticed on the '69 Acadian brochure that Carl S. has advertised elsewhere on the site, they refer to a third shift pattern that appears to be 2-speed, labelled as "Torque Drive". How is that different than the regular old Powerglide?
Yup, was basicly a powerglide with 1/2 the parts removed. it would downshift, but you had to manually upshift. I have an original GM JamHandy filmstrip from 1969 that explains the whole thing in incredible detail as well as a small salesmans handbook.

There was one in a 71 or 72 6 cylinder Nova that a buddy had a few years ago. It's basically a Powerglide with some parts missing. It probably cost GM more to make these manual shift Powerglides than to just make a Powerglide.
