Thats a good deal
Were still searching for confirmation of any 1965 Pontiac receiving a 396 of any sort but it looks like no. When the first (RPO L 72) 427, 425 H.P. engines were introduced for 1966 they were rated at 450 H.P. but there
was some AMA agreement that passenger cars could only have a maximum 425 H.P. so its no coincidence that the
426 Hemi, 427 Ford and 427 Chevy were all rated at 425 H.P. in passenger cars. As a result, the (RPO L 78) 396 got down rated to 375 H.P. and the L 72 got the 425 H.P. decal. The (RPO L 37) 1965 Z16 Chevelle 396, 375 H.P. was a one year only deal with all the 425 H.P. parts but hydraulic
cam so Chevy didn't even have to buy new air cleaner decals!!. Thanks Randy
