Pretty much the nicest looking deathtrap ever made!
Now that is not very nice. If you are meaning that total BULL**** video that was made by insurance ASS*****, depicting a 59 going into a modern car in a collision and the 59 coming apart like a plastic model car. That 59 had the motor and transmission removed for the collision video. NOW WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THEY DID THAT!!!!! Let me tell you why, because when you remove the drive line out of the car it tends to collapse far easier like the 59 in the video did. By the way the drive line in the modern car was left in there. NOW WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THEY DID THAT. Well............. i think we all know why the modern car had a full drive line left in it and the 59 did not. That 59 is no more a death trap than any of our other vintage cars. Cheers. George

I would like to add that concerning the stupid video with the 59 Chev and the modern car colliding for that stupid insurance propaganda nonsense. Had the modern car had (NO) drive line and the 59 Chev (HAD) a drive line, well.................. lets just say the outcome would be very very different. I find it hard to comprehend that some folks still think that nonsense is for real. Cheers. George

(1) I concur on the '80s Impala wheel covers. Anything from the fifties or sixties would look better on that car than those do. I still see proper '59 Chevy full wheel covers for sale quite reasonably from time to time, so the new owner should be able to seek some out.
(2) Chill on the death trap stuff. All old cars are death traps (even new ones for that matter - deaths due to auto accidents happen every day, you can't escape the principals of momentum and inertia), but why dwell on it? Every time you go out on the road you are taking the chance that you're not coming back - it's a fact of life. If you dwell on it you are already not living to the fullest - at least that's how I feel about it.
One could go into a long dissertation on the evolution of safety technology in cars over the past century, but there's no need. It's all out there if you want to research it.
Does the X-frame have weaknesses? Sure it does - look it up. Are 4-door hardtops weaker than a rollover than a 4-door sedan, sure, especially the thin-pillar versions like the vista roof - but without seatbelts you are going to be bouncing around inside or thrown out onto the road anyhow. But then how many people worry about a convertible with zero rollover protection? That body style is still available in new cars, so people either accept the risk or are oblivious to it. Motorcycles have zero crash protection but they are still sold as new vehicles. Nothing worse for getting hit than a bicycle, but they are on the road in increasing numbers. There are many ways to die out there much worse than a big old 4-door hardtop - I won't even get into how many people climb up on their roofs without adequate fall protection, etc. etc. Why even talk about that in an old car forum?
The fact is that we love these old cars for their style, simplicity and nostalgia - let's leave it at that.

remember the NBC Dateline video of the 'exploding' chevrolet p/up fuel tank? i don't doubt for a minute that '59 wasn't doctored in some way for that video.
and yes, without a doubt new cars are indeed safer

That is a really nice example of a stock 59. It looks just like the one on the cover of the 59 Chevrolet brochure, except for those 80-85 wheelcovers. Canadian-built! Manual steering & brakes, 283 Powerglide. Typical. The interior, though not my favorite colour, is wonderfully well preserved.
George, I remember seeing that 59 Chevy vs. 09 Malibu staged offset crash. I had no idea they removed the engine from the 59. Talk about stacking the deck. And what a waste of a nice old 59...

That's exactly I was talking about. When I was a kid I remember seeing one of these in a boneyard after a rollover. Pretty flat. Kind of like a convertible in terms of rollover protection. That being said I would love to own that car and drive it anywhere.

Phillip, that is interesting all that you said there. I guess we can consider ourselves lucky here in North America. Cars are still plentiful and reasonable in cost. The old car market now really sucks in general here and the deals are to be had. The economy here is fragile at best and old cars are just luxuries anyway. Phillip, would it make any sense to buy a car like this 59 here in Canada and have it shipped to Aussie land. What would be the average cost to ship a vintage car there. With shipping, taxes and all the other B.S. that is involved in getting a car there. To me it sounds like it would be worth it to import a car such as this 59. What are your thoughts on the matter. We lived at #6 on our street and at #15 across the street was the Wright's. Mr. Wright had one of these in white top with yellow body. At the time we had a '61 batwing Strato Chief. I thought that Impala was the best car in the world, it was so cool because even when it was new it was very rare to see a vista roof decked out Impala, quite a contrast to our stripped Strato Chief. It was the nicest car on our street hands down at that time.
I'd kill to see footage of how they manufactured that Backlight. Heck it had to be quite the process making the front let alone that rear.
Are these reflectors on the door handles?
Imagine installing a new glass with that overhang.

Thanks for the info, as usual stuff looks better in pics than in person. Sounds like not a bad car overall, but maybe just priced a little high. Maybe the seller will reconsider your offer eventually...
