My 1967 ambulance

Hello folks!

I joined recently and wanted to show you my latest acquisition: my 1967 Superior High Top Pontiac ambulance.  I saw that car in 2000 at a professional car show and always followed the owners.  During that time I restored a police car, then a 1970 Miller-Meteor ambulance and after the sale of both I made an offer to finally get this beauty home.

Equipped qith a 400 V8, it runs like a charm and I drove the car from New Brunswick thru Quebec, almost 1100 kilometers the same day.  Will have to work on the interior this winter but generally the car looks amazing.  All equipped with 1960's emergency stuff, I tell you it's a head turner.  The paint job was done in the 1990's and still looks good.

It was acquired brand new in Ontario and served on a power plant in Chalk River. Then the car was left in a field, rescued by a collector which I met in Kingston at the 2000 international meet.

I always loved the curvy look of these Hightop Superior Pontiacs, they were pretty rare north here I documented 2 or 3 in the whole province, and as your post shows we were usually using Demers conversions. Demers used every station wagon base for their conversions, I have a picture of a '67 Pontiac but these car are long time gone now, only one conversion is still alive to my knowledge.

That's a big car, is it built on a Boneville?

I saw one a couple years ago on the Coast To Coast tour when it came to PEI. There was/is also a guy that owns one here on PEI ... his name is Foster of Spoke Wheel Museum fame.

Technically only the front is Pontiac (Bonneville yes). Back then Superior used a GM commercial frame and built the car around it. They did the same for Cadillac ambulances, hearses and limousines. I have heard the doors are modified convertible doors. The roof and rear end are in fiberglass. They used Corvair tail lights also. The windshield is also the same commercial glass they used on Cadillacs, my ex-1970 M-M had the same, it's really high. Sounds strange but these Pontiacs were considered medium-cheap ambulances in USA, the Cadillacs were mush more equipped.

Nope, believe it or not, I have never been to the Nationals. I'd love to go, but I always find myself too busy. This past summer was the first summer I had never been to a car show.cry

There is also a guy that lives down from me that has a mid '70s Cadillac hearse. It creeps-out the older neighbours.

Knew a guy who had one of these old units back in the early 60s in NB. Got hit square in the arse end by a guy in a 63 Chevy doing maybe 65 mph. Chevy was totaled and the driver not much better. Ambulance ended on its side in the ditch with a bent back step and a few scratches. They are next thing to a tank!

Also had a Bud in the 70s , ex Black Watch who bought one as a daily driver around Saint John NB. Needless to say, he always was given a wide berth by ordinary traffic.

These were basically Dodge Power Wagons with a L-head six engine. They were built as Signals vans as well.
