Doing Research for Restoration Details

I am an owner of a 1970 Chevelle SS396, not a Beaumont or even a Pontiace, but she that was built in Oshawa, Ont. If you have an Oshawa built car with posi like mine, you may or may not know that the warning sticker in your trunk is a unique item, unlike cars built in the US. MIne had been in pretty good shape until I wiped down the underside of the trunk lid with a damp cloth and watched in HORROR as the ink came off! Before now there was only one reproduction available (that I could find), and it was of terrible quality and differed from the originals greatly. Wrong font. Wrong letter/line/word spacings. Even the quality of the printing was lacking as the type looked blotchy and bleeding rather than crisp.

With the help of a fellow Team Chevelle member, I have recreated this elusive sticker, using a surviving original example (taken from a 70 Chevelle) as a guide. I am a professional graphic designer, and my reproduction matches the original nearly perfectly. I've even included the original typos (missing periods) as they are shown on the originals. Now you can be one step closer to "correct" with this quality reproduction.

My question is can anyone confirm which cars and what date range this sticker was used?  What about Beaumont? LeMans? GTO? What about other GM brands? This sticker may be correct for all posi vehicles built at the Oshawa GM plant, but I'd like to get some input. I know for fact that this sticker is faithful and correct for my 1970 Chevelle, and I've confirmed that the Chevelle date range is now more like 67 - 72, based on reports from owners of other cars. Here are the cars that I've been told by others are correct:

Chevelle - 67-72

Corvair - 65/66

Impala - 65 (seen on a car in the mid-70s, original and not a resto)

Parisienne - 66 (seen on a car in the mid-70s, original and not a resto)

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. And if you need one of these I can post an ad in the classified section. Thank you looking and thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

When I get home tonight I'll post a pic of my original '64 Parisienne posi sticker. We'll compare. I know the font did change throughout the years.

It appears that the cheap, blotchy looking repo previously available is a closer match to yours. There are still issues with font size, letter/word/line spacing, and over-all quality, but at least they matched your font correctly. Thanks for the info!

Michael, I hope you don't mind if I move this thread over to the restoration section entitled "For The Purist". I feel it will get much better exposure there (and well deserved exposure I might add).

Hey, Carl. No, I don't mind at all. Thank you!

I know that I'm a bit of a tourist here and I didn't want to ruffle any feathers, so I posted in the "Hi! I'm the Newbie" forum. I appreciate the effort.

OK....just found this thread....I see it's about 5 months old.

Is there a "correct" 1964 version in the works?

And where are your repro's available?

MoboMac,

Hey man. The "cheap reproduction" I show in my first photos comes the closest to fulfilling your needs in the strictest sense of being the closest to font weights and styles. However, it is so badly printed that I cannot recommend it. The lines are not crisp. They edges are bleeding and it looks like utter crap to me. Pontiacanada posted pics of his '64 Pariesienne's original posi sticker above as well, and that's what you're looking for, though I do not know where to get that design in that quality.

I had had my stickers up on eBay for a while but got ZERO results.

I also have an ad on Team Chevelle (chevelles.com) that I need to refresh/renew. That's where I've done my most business. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear them.

M

Thanks for the update/info....

Found these ones on the internet....I think they are Jim Osborne's.

Thought I'd let the experts have a look at them....

Hey there MoboMac,

Yes, those look like the product I initially bought, was disappointed in, then made my own. What gives them away to my eye, is how uneven the thickness of the font lines are. Just look at "See Owner's Manual" to see what I mean. The lower halves of the words looks like they're fading out, thickness-wise. In person you will see ink bleeds all along the outline of the typesetting, which creates this uneven appearance.

Those are technically correct for you, though their quality is crap.

OK,thanks for your input......prolly good enough for the girls I go out with.....

I see your frustration with trying to sell parts for Canadian built cars.....Just not enough of us out there that care about those details....Plus.....I'd bet that 95% of Canadian built cars did NOT need one of these stickers...
