Stereo Install

So decided to start getting together a new stereo for the ride , will cut the dash and install my Christmas present, my new Pioneer DEH80PRS cd head unit, then an amp in the trunk with 1 subwoofer in a box and 2 nice 3way speakers on the back deck that I will remake and cover in black carbon fiber. Will get carpet underlay and pull the old carpet as I already have the new carpet.will be all RCA jacks, wires to head unit will be soldered and shrink tubed, most likely will have to paint the floor first? new power antenna will be installed even though I'm not sure on how to do it? I have the full manual but it shows nothing about the antenna on the (front left) fender. Will run a cable to the front battery and put in a power distribution block for the amp.Getting the other stuff soon and hopefully installing this summer, any tips about installation welcome here as I am a tech but not a proffesional stereo installation tech.

Should sound good. Just remember once you cut the dash there's no going back.

Boy and I didn't want to say anything (don't cut the dash)!! With blue tooth, memory sticks, remote, etc, I'm going to mount mine under pass seat and if it ever blows up I wont have to make a new hole! Might also work as a seat heater, they do get hot.smile

I mounted mine in the glovebox, I have a fabricated aluminum glovebox liner painted black, everything was hidden and no cutting... Tweeters where the vent pull knobs are, mids in the kick vents, two 3.5" fills in the centre dash factory speaker hole, two mid-bass in the rear ledge with speaker cloth right across, and a 10" sub behind the seat... I can take everything out and go stock in about an hour....

30 years ago I wouldn`t have given it a second thought and would have cut the dash. I don`t think I could do it now!! Too many other options out there for sure!!

Funny to see you all cringing on here, well this car is not stock anyway, the interior is. No one is ever getting this car and I will customize it further ,like removing the steering wheel and putting on a custom one. Also full suspension upgrades and all around disk brakes.Check out the old cassette player the last owner had, will be pulling that out soon, no under dash for me, right where that old AM radio is, sorry guys.

Do whatever mods you want, it's your car. We all have different styles and taste, but I personally would keep all the original parts. If you ever did sell it would probably increase the value.

Received the pioneer head unit DEH-80PRS, now will have to get a Hertz 5 channel amp next, but they are not cheap so it might take a bit.

I haven't bought components in decades, but that doesn't seem too bad for an amp that has 5 channels and built in crossovers... Back in the day that would have been a couple of amps, custom made crossovers...and it would add up.

Good project...

Yes that Hertz stuff is top notch, lots of power in one little box, but with tax ,that thing is almost $1000, then there's the speakers which will also be Hertz, they are about $700, with the install kit and Dynamat it starts to really add up, then of course there's the alarm as well and the Hertz sub too.

I do remember from a long time ago being in my friends shops doing competitive installs, that you're going to really have to put a lot of attention to the dynamat and tightening up the old car overall to get the benefit of the nicer components working in that car. Are you angling the speakers to center on your head? Is direction still a strong consideration in planning?

Check out that head unit I'm using , it's pretty cool, has auto time alignment , so no need to angle speakers with these, speakers are specially made for this as well.

Dash cuts make my tummy turn but it is your car do do as you wish. I have learned over the years that a modified old car makes untouched cars that much more unique and valuable for the purists. I everyone left them original and untouched they would all be the same low valued car and uninteresting. Different tastes it what makes the hobby what it is. Not my cup of tea but good luck with your project

I did one on my GP a while back and did a writeup on it.

Thanks for the reply Carl, sadly this is not what I need to know, this is more about removing the old antenna from the front right fender, the cable runs through the body into the passenger side interior.I believe I need to remove the front hood vents( the name of this escapes me) to remove and install this. The new power antenna is wired to the new head unit by the remote power cable(blue and white) and the antenna cable just plugs in.The new power antenna has the antenna unit and a long cable attached to the motor ,which must be installed, in the fender or passenger side interior?

In 2014 I got a Pioneer with Infinity speakers installed in my truck. Nice sound.

I did without my antenna (took it right off) because I don't listen to radio (my choice). The truck looks a lot cleaner without the mast.

If I was to get radio, I'd get Sirius.
