How many miles a year are you going to drive your '61?

If not many, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd guess 17-20 mpg...

depends a lot on what gears are in the rear end?? City or Hwy. driving? I'd say 57 Pathfinder is pretty close for Hwy mileage with 3:08's to 3:36 gears!!

Ethan, is your car a power glide or a stick on the tree. If your 261 is in "perfect" tune and i do mean perfect tune, it is not that much better than a 283 with a two barrel. These motors like the 235's were never that great on gas. You have to be light on the foot and keep that motor running like a top ,to get half decent mileage. The Power glide offers  less gas mileage than the stick unless of course you rev the six just before it blows, when you shift. I am only guessing but you should get about 12-15 in the city and 18-20 on the high way............. more or less. I have owned many of these sixes and they were never super stars for fuel consumption. Good luck and cheers mate. George
